I took a 3M pad to my crank pulley and 'pointer' and scuffed them up, and then hit them three times with medium grey Krylon paint. Afterwards I took a spray can of old white Rustoleum, sprayed a bunch into a coffee can lid and then took a small artist's brush and painted all of the pertinent timing marks that I wanted to see.

Still looks good after 2 years..........

I've used White-Out...bloch it one and wipe off, you should see the marks on the balancer then if it doesn't have too much rust on it

I cleaned off the crank pulley with mineral spirits and took fine sandpaper to it to remove all the previous white smudges I did trying to improve things. Then I took a can of white paint I had laying around and found a small artists brush. With the brush I painted a little blob over the 10° and 20° BTDC marks. They are still hard to see with the timing light I have. When I first checked the base timing was more than 20° BTDC and I found it difficult to turn the dizzy finely enough to adjust the timing. I kept overshooting the hell out of it in both directions until I finally got it around 14° BTDC. I locked the dizzy there and I'm going to see what if any mpg improvements I see.
The funny thing is that I never noticed any pinging even with the timing way advanced. Also, it was never hard to start and actually ran pretty much the sane with the timing anywhere between 0° and nearly 30° BTDC... And that is running 87 octane gasoline. Maybe I need to have my hearing checked . Gotta love those old school V8s with cast iron heads

I cleaned mine up with sand paper, smeared it with silver anti-seized and then lightly wiped it off with a paper towel so that the anti-seize stayed down in the marks. That silver really lights up in the strobe.

Sounds good...for a while. That NeverSeize is gonna attract dirt and grime like a fricken magnet.........

But hey, if you can see the marks and get your timing done, you win....

Meh, in the north nothing is durable so that's not something I shoot for. Just be glad I left out the part about getting the balancer cleaned up by sanding it while it was running. Nope, I didn't say that and you shouldn't try it. It's stoooooopid! (but also really quick, if you don't have to go to the ER first)

I did the same thing---but if you tell anyone, I'll deny it 'til the day I die....
