I have a 73 F100 with a 390, the oil pan drain plug is right over the cross member. Is this the way it came from the factory or has the engine been swapped and this pan is designed for a car instead of a truck? I can not imagine Ford would design it this way.
Hi, Not sure on your situation but a lot of the car oil pans were front sump.
4x4 oil pans were rear sump.
A good trick is to cut a plastic quart oil bottle in half, long ways to use as a deflector. That way when you drain your oil, you can deflect it over the cross member. Hope this helps.
I can't comment on that particular combination, but a lot of trucks did come that way. The answer is yes, Ford really did design it that way in several cases, so it's not necessarily an indicator that the engine has been swapped.

I dont think it was so much that they designed it that way but that they FORGOT to design it. "Hey, lets stick the 390 in the F series and offer it next month! Great idea, make it happen."
