It just looked to me like metal gone, corroded away, and wasn't sure how much of it was part of the sealing surface. I guess I'd like to know how involved this is to fix...or whether its just a matter of replacing a seal.
I'm not the most mechanically inclined individual, so bare with me here...
I have a bunch of stuff I want to do to this truck...AFTER I get the engine issues taken care of.
My hope would be that the source of the leak is the valve cover above, that oil is merely
running down the head in an area and spreading out from there. I'd hope for something easy
like that, I guess another possibility could be a PCV hose?
But, here's a question... can you identify the fluid? Is it oil? Or anti freeze? Or something
else? I guess what I'd do is "wash it and watch it." Another approach might be to get some
fluorescent dye from NAPA (there are various formulations for different uses, look it up on
their site) that stuff luminescences (glows) under a black light, you can use that as a tool
to locate a source.
Hopefully, it's not the head gasket.
EDIT: Could it be spilled oil from adding new oil at the top?
