Auto trans shifter slipping
Oh, ya...whats the stock carb on this thing. Need to rebuild it. Thanks
Looking through the factory manual, I can see that there's a stamped detent cam/lever inside the transmission housing, that goes on the inner end of the shaft with the shift lever. That's probably the part that's worn out. It's not clear how much of the valve body and parts you have to remove to be able to replace it. But you definitely have to get up in there.
Bill (Number Dummy), would that part still be available? It's called the Detent Lever, in the '67 manual, page 7-81, illustration D1512-C, Figure 53, Transmission Case Control Linkage.
You probably also have the MX-HD transmission. A quick way to tell is to look at the transmission pan. The C4 pan is fairly shallow, maybe 1 1/2" deep. The MX-HD pan is about 3" deep, with a big drain plug in the middle on the passenger side.
The stock carb is the Ford/Autolite 2 barrel. It's an easy carb to rebuild. Surprisingly, I found the kit in stock at a local Trak Auto for about $12.
The detent is bolted to the bottom of the steering column upper flange. The shift lever has a tab on it that fits in between the individual gates of the detent.
xstrange: See your other thread for the reason why the detent fails, its part number and sources that have some.
