I have done quite a bit of searching through here and i have determined i have a FE in my 66 f-100 4x4. I've read most casting #'s on the back of the block say 352 no matter what it is. I know 360 and 390's are exteriorly identical with the 390 having another 1/4" of stroke.
My question is how can i tell if i have a 352 or a 360/390 without tearing it apart. From what i can tell a 352 and 360 both have a 3.5 stroke so measuring that would not help.
I posted this here instead of the 61-66 b/c i assumed more FE knowledge in these year trucks.
BTW, my truck is a 66 with a "Y" engine code. I was under the impression Y codes were for 67's with a 360.
1965 F100/350 only: D is the VIN engine code for the 352.
360/390's first installed in F100/350's in 1968.
The only V8 installed in 1965/67 F100/350's was the 352.
The 352 cast on blocks is a foundry mark. It will be found on myriad 352/360/390/410/428 engines, because all the blocks were cast as 352's.
Only when the blocks had cured...then were finished, could they be other sizes.
Stroke: 352/360 = 3.50" / 390 = 3 7/8" // 352's have a 4.00" bore // 1968/76 360/390 blocks have the same bore: 4.05" // 1968/76: The difference between the 360 vs the 390 is the crank, pistons and rods.
btw: You may assume that there's more info in this forum inre to FE engines, but...that may not always be the case.
Since you have a '66, you should post in the 1961/66 forum.
ok thanks, What i read said that the D engine code went up to 66, this is where I got that information, so LMC must be incorrect
In a recap there is no way to tell a 352 from a 360 without actually measuring the bore size.
LMC's VIN decoders aren't worth diddly-squat...this chart is a typical example.
Some glaring errors:
B: 262 1V = 1961/64 F100/600.
C: 292 2V = 1957/64 F100/600.
The 292 4V was an extra cost option over the 292 2V in F350/600's.
D: 292 4V = 1957/64 F350 and larger trucks ONLY! Not installed in F100/250's.
D: 352 2V = 1965 F100/350.
G: 302 2V = 1969/79 F100 / 1975/79 F150.
Y: 352 2V = 1966/67 F100/350.
Y: 360 2V = 1968/76 F100/350.
302's were not installed in F250's until 1980.
Since 11/2006, I've decoded well over 700 VIN's, Rating Plates, Warranty Plates and Certification Labels for FTE members using the apropos Ford parts catalogs.
352/360/390's look identical, there is no way visual way to tell one from another. There are no ID markings or VIN's on these engines, either...except for casting and date codes.
Casting numbers on engine blocks/heads are WORTHLESS for ID'ing engine sizes, as they cannot be cross referenced to Ford part numbers.
Thanks I appreciate the help. It's ridiculous that information out there is so contradicting. You would think a company would pride themselves on offering as much factual information as they can get their hands on.
