I figure you're getting the best range of engine blocks with that one, it's cheaper than the junkyard engine, if the clutch feels good and the trans shifts you can be pretty confident that the tranny will make the drive. Since you just purchased the vehicle you shouldn't have to worry about licensing and title transfer for the trip.
Trailer rental sometimes adds up fast, but sometimes you can score a good deal for one on craigslist that could compete fairly well with trailer rental cost.
And hey if you don't tell the seller your name and it dies on you just hook the trailer to your truck, take the title with you and drive a few miles down the road and claim you know nothing about the truck
call him and tell him this... "i'll tell you what, how about i come by, no tire kicking, no bullshiz, hand you 800 bucks for the truck." i bet he'll take it.

I've been on the other end of that situation, it's not cool. Two months after I sold a car I get a call saying I owe $500 in towing and storage fee's on my car, a car I only sold for $350. Kid used it with stolen plates and never titled it. Luckily the manager let me take the car back only paying the $95 towing fee. The kid ran it out of coolant and cracked the block. I was able to sell the tires for $100 and scrap the rest for $75 so I still came out ahead. Since then, EVERY time I sell a car I fill out the liability transfer form on the bottom of the title and pay the $2 fee to ensure I dont get screwed like that again.
