Hi everybody, quick but very urgent question. I've spent the day trying to drop the C6 on my 79 150 with a 400. I dropped the transfer case first, disconnected both drive shafts (4X4), took out the transmition crossmember, and now, at 2 am, have hit a major wall, literally, the firewall...
I was told months ago that I wouldn't need to unmount my engine to drop the tranny, that it would just slide back, and through all the parts and tools research, didn't think another thing of that part. Now though, when it WON'T SLIDE BACK more than 2 inches without it appears hitting the top of the bellhousing against the firewall, I have the horrible feeling that I might have screwed waaaay up.
Can you drop a C6 off of a 351/400 in a truck with no aftermarket body lift without pulling the engine, at least partly out?
And if not (AHHHH!), what the heck do I do now? My transmissions toast, I need to rebuild it no matter what, HOW DO I GET IT OUT?
Please help, I don't have much time to do this project, and after a day like I had today if I've made a mistake like this it's not gunna be good.
Thanks, AleX
Was just outside killing time until I got a response here, and after a fresh look I saw that my engine mounts hould be flexing alot more than they were, and then noticed that the one exhaust pipe that I had left connected was under alot of tension. Undid the bolts on the flange and that loosened things up, but no magic yet. Have to call it a night for now and leave everything teetering, but if anybody else has done this successfully, let me know, and thanks for the help tina!
Till morning....later in the morning..... AleX
You did remove the torque converter from the flex plate right? You will only have to clear the alignment dowels and the trans will fall out. This is only a matter of an inch maybe a fraction more. If you were able to remove the bellhousing bolts, then you have enough room to drop the trans.
You have something hung up or in the way, and me thinks it might be the converter.
If it is disconnected from the flexplate, then be sure that it is pushed all that way back into the trans pump. This should provide you with just enough clearance to allow the trans to fall right out.
Heak I remove these without taking the t-case off. You should not have a problem.
Disconnect the torque converter....? Well that's the problem then I'm sure, I haven't touched that yet. How do I disconnect the converter though, I haven't seen any internal bolt heads that I can reach, and the bolts that attach it to the flexplate that I can see are going back to front, through the converter first, then threading into the flexplate.
I'll look around under there, but if you can tell me exactly where those bolts are, that would be a great help. Thanks though, glad to know it is at least possible.
Let me know, AleX
There are four special nuts (they are locknuts, replace them with new) that bolt through the flexplate on the studs on the TC. You need to turn the motor to get to them, big bolt on the front of the crank. You should also drain the TC, but you dont have to, you should see a drain plug a couple of inches from one of the studs. You only need a couple of inches to slide the trans back. The TC will slide back into the trans bellhousing some, keep pushing on it lightly when droping the trans down or it can just slide forward off the shaft.
There should be an inspection cover facing the front of the vehicle, right between the engine and transmission at the bottom. Remove the cover (2 screws/bolts). Then you'll have access to TC nuts that 75F350/Joseph69 mentioned.
A few other things: make sure you have the coolers lines disconnected, as well as the transmission linkage, and the Neutral Safety Switch unplugged.
Have you got a transmission jack under the trany.? I'm a little concerned about you safety as it sounds like you are new to working on a vehical. Good luck and be careful , JIM
Ahhh I can't believe I missed those nuts, popped them off, transmission came right down. The whole thing is also now dissassembled and I found the problem that's been messing me up for 6 months! Shattered belleville spring, no pressure on the forward clutch. Now I have my transfer case, drive shafts, headers and exhaust pipes to hang back up when I didn't need to do any fo that, but oh well. Thanks for all the help everybody!
And thanks for the concern Jim, I am new at transmission stuff. This is my second truck and I've taken them both apart, and there's been a couple cars too, but I've taught myself everything as I go, never had any training or even experience with cars before I just started diving in and liked it, so when I work on a component for the first time, I'm going in more or less blind, and this was my first transmission. I did have a jack under it, don't have a transmission one but I made it work, but I always make sure I'm safe before doing anything.
Thanks again guys, and if anybody knows where I can get a Belleville spring by Monday....

Good to here you got it out and found your problem. I had to ask about the jack because i am one of those "self taught guys" and learned a lot of it the hard way. I use a roll around floor jack. I started on old cars when I was 14 years old , that was back in the 1950s. I always kept it as a hobby so I would not get burned out. I'm still building street rods and trucks and having fun , always ready to try something different. You have a good day now, JIM
