Flip, i "think" they are the same all the way to 79 on the tailgate hardware, i was eyeballing the hardware on my parts truck before i sold it. it looked the same to me although i'm not 100% certain.
You know that makes good sense as a 79s tailgate will fit in the 64. I think I may try this. I am more worried about the cable not tucking into the tailgate when closed.
Anyone had any luck using cables for a 70s ford in lieu of the metal straps?
Stopped at local hardware and noticed workers truck tailgate where he used cables in place of the chain. Commented to him about it and he made me a set within 20 min' and for less than $10 for the wire cable; believe cable dia. is around 1/4" to 3/8 ", a couple wire cable crimp connectors, and couple eyelets. He assembled it there at the store, kinda handy since store had the professional crimping tool.
I changed mine to cable straps because I didn't want the metal straps to hit the paint and chip it. This is what I did for mine.
I made these brackets to hold the top of the cable.
I cut off the tailgate mounts, drilled and tapped them for the straps.
I bought cables for a 99 F-250 SuperDuty. I wish that I had found a little bit shorter cable because the tailgate latch was hard to get mounted with the cable mount in the way, but it all worked well.
My cables do not bind at all and fold up very nicely. I definetely prefer this over the original straps.
I know this is an old post, but maybe someone is still looking at it. Does anyone know where to find support straps for a unibody? I think they are 1/4 in steel rods that had some kind of pivot in the middle, but I can't find any. Thank you all for your help
If I posted the source here, how long do you think it would last? 100's of people read the posts, someone else might snag it.
