Fuel Filter Change trick

I didn't see this trick in the info portion of the Fuel filter change Doc's. I tried this and it worked pretty well for the one in the rail. Use commercial aluminum foil and form a drain channel to guide the fuel into your bucket. Take your time to tuck it in well. It kept fuel out of the rail and off me.

Did they go to a vertical unit in later years, and do the lines match up to replace the horizontal unit?

There are also advantages to a 4 X 2. Easy access, no mess and a piece of cake.

The vertical units are only found in the vans as far as I know. Sure would be nice to have them in our trucks!

Vertical is the standard part for the E-Series, which in theory, do not see "off road" use.

You can either get one off a E series wreck, at any Parker filter / boat / marine dealer, or whatever.

I don't know if it matches up --- let me see if I can find you a pic.

Go to page 12 of the above.

P3 is what we have. Note you can fit a bigger P4 or P5 there --- I can't be sure but the wiring looks the same.

Note there are 3 optional filters, 2, 10 and 30 micron.

This picture has a clear view of the port:

Please let us know if this matches up with the existing hose --- if not, a quick fix can be done.

I do not have the part number of the drain plug I have but it can be loosened by hand with no allen wrench and it can be loosened all of the way out and there is a peice of it that holds it into the conditioning module and the fuel runs down the plug and doesn't make a mess (as long as I reach over the drive shaft and loosen the plug from the top of it, then I can just let go of it and let it hang out of the hole) However, there is still a little bit of fuel that is still in there when the filter is removed. I drain the module every oil change and use the fuel to clean out the drain pan(which lately has been about every 6 days). If whoever is reading this doesn't know what I am talking about when speaking of the different drain plug, man you should find out what it is and you will love it. Just my .02.

Boy, aren't me glad with the Horizontal unit - drain plug is right on base on bottom.

No fuss, no mess, and it is plastic.

Update;

Just went out with a common pair of pliers, unscrewed the drain, and watch diesel (no water) trickle out.

No fuss, no mess, easily doable as often as I am lazy enough to do.

Who needs the VFCM with its metal plug?

gearloose1, you have the vertical unit, the horizontal HFCM is the messy one.

You change your oil every 6 days? Dang, when do you sleep?

I just save the drained fuel in a can and use it for fire starter. And sometimes I just let it drain into the oil bucket.

ressurecting an oldie. Another trick is to take a big bunch of shop towels and cram them in the frame rail under the filter cap and after draining the water separator, the shop towels will catch any fuel left while pulling out the filter. And a low fuel tank will ensure that there isnt a constant trickle of fuel after removing the filter. I am still racking up the miles like I was when this thread was posted and I will do anything I can to stay clean after maintenance (cause there aint always a shower for me directly after maintenance). And the blue nitrile gloves are great, harbor freight has 100 of em for under $10. I am strolling down "memory lane" I guess, checking out old subscriptions.

I just change mine tonight. Took long hot shower, still smell and washed cloths twice. Changed the spring also. I'll remember this trick for next time.
