tried replacing spark plugs brok the second one nut and treads came out insulator and conductor remained tried removing with easy out and twisted off conductor about 3/4 inch pulled out of insulator any tips on removing insulator and remaining parts would be a huge help this is my work truck and only vehichle
I seeby your profile that you have an 05. leslie tools make an extractor to remove the lower shell. You need to get one and pull it out. Their are quite a few treads on the forum about plug removal for th 05 and up 3 valve motors, along with a TSB from Ford. I put Champions in my truck, they make a better designed plug, with the lower section welded, not crimped, like the Motorcrafts.
thanks for the help
is there any risk of the shell falling into the cyliner if i run the motor i put the conductor back in the insulator and replaced coil pack seems to be firing believe it or not am soaking it in pb blaster hapoing it will break down the carbon and blow out on tha compression stroke
I have heard of people blowing out the ceramic part and the shell. If it where me I would run it like that. Its an allfully big risk of it dropping into the cylinder, and your going to be replacing a motor. You need to soften tthe carbon that is holding in the shell in the head.
on these trucks we always use a 3/8's impact gun to crack them loose. They are so common for breaking its not worth taken the change of breaking them. Fingers crossed we've never had one break doing it this way.
Is a person better off running some sea-foam or fuel cleaner through a couple tanks before attempting to change the plugs or am I crazy???
A month prior to changing my plugs, I ran 6oz to every 10 gallons Of Marvel mystry Oil in every tank. Mine came out extremly easy.
There sems to be a rash of people on her lately attempting plug changes in the 5.4L 3v engines, without doing any reseach prior to atempting to change them. And are having bad results.
I had a plug break without trying to change it. The truck would shake real bad, turns out the #4 broke. I have been trying to break it loose, no luck yet. I did take another one apart to see what i was dealing with the part below the nut has a shoulder on it so it cant fall down, the only smart thing about the design.
Following the proper procedures on removal is key "BUT" there is no guarantee that you won't have a problem no matter how you handle it or what precautionary steps you take in the process. It just comes down to being a poor design matched with how the truck is treated, maintained and the enviornment it is subjected to, amoung others.
