I got the box, trimmed the spring mount that hits the bottom of the box, now, can I use the manual steering pitman arm or will I need the power steering center link???

The corner of the spring mount closest to the steering box must be trimmed to clear the bottom of the power steering gear. Converting it to power steering, power 4 wheel disc, & auto with a 466

You didn't say what truck you have and the stock setup. We don't know what your talking about. Can you elaborate a bit for us?

'65 F-100 stock manual steering. '72 power steering box is mounted in it's place. The 2 have different pitman arms, the manual has a straight one, the power has a "S" shaped one. The center link won't fit the newer pitman atr & I was wondering if someone knew if the steering shafts themselvs were the same spline so the 2 arms could be interchanged. You have to forgive me for being so short on descriptions, I'm an Okie

Kenny, you're gona have to run with this one, he must be mixing 2X4 and 4X4, because there is no modification except for the engine perch on the FE.

What the hello is a 466?

Just when you think it's safe to ask a question or two here, someone wants a "take it & run" again. Ok, 4.392 bore & 3.850 stroke is a 466. It bolts in to a 1965 F-100 using later(mine are '77) 460 truck mounts, power steering boxes and steering columns exchange too. Guess it's too much to ask to be professional about this? I'll just get the new center link(drag link) & be done with this thread. I've been doing this for 30 years without help, guess I'll continue. BTW this is the reason most people I race with quit racing Fords, everyone thinks it's top secret & no one shares info. I'll get off my soap box & go someplace I'm welcome

If you want to talk fords... you can email me, If I don't know the answer I'll ask my "tech guy" who is a 64 y/o man who has raced all his life, and retired from the Rail Road as a mechanic after 40 years.... If he don't know, he can find out fast.

Ok, I guess we deserved that. I re-read the entire thread and it seems that even I was a little rash. It's just that you gave very little info in this postfor us to understand what you were trying to accomplish. Johns done the homework on these typoes of mods as he has two of them (i think).
It has been my understanding that the column, gearbox, ptiman, etc are easily swapped into the 65-66 trucks. I personally haven't one this as I have a 64 (now with Mustang II IFS). John will be of great help if you give him all the facts at hand. He tends to be a bit gruff if you only give him a spoon or two at a time (tee hee).
Give him a try, he can grow on you (it might take some alcohol and a scotch Brite pad to get him off though)

qt, Like Kenny said you didn't give us much to work with. You can see your truck we can't. Being an Okie, aint much excuse. he he

FYI, From the rear of the cab forward to the bumper the chassis are the same from 65 to 79. All of the steering gears bolt into the same 3 holes on the chassis rail. There are three gears used in that time period. The manual, the Bendix power gear (limited use) and the Ford power gear (all three hole mounts).

When I upgraded my 66, I bought (recommended method) a 76 and swapped everything, I-beams with disc brakes, power steering, auto tranny, steering column, as well as the two speed wiper. I used the forward slanting left side FE engine perch for power steering. Every thing bolted right up and fit perfectly. The front end was still alleigned.

So when you said that you "trimmed the spring mount that hits the bottom of the box" I thought you must be trying to mix 4X4 with 4X2 parts, or worse yet, brand X parts.

Take a long slow breath, and try us again.

Ahhhhhhhh, now that THAT'S out of the way I finally got to figuring out the problem. Seems the idiot (me) that put the drop I-beams on, put them on the wrong side The pitman arm lines up better. It has been so long since I've done this it's illegal! At least the power steering, disc brakes & automatic column are there, now I need to shorten the frame for a step side... Thanks for being patient
