for those who could care less, long story short I got gas in my tank at the fault of the service station, about a 50/50 mix of gas and diesel. I drove the truck about 30 miles and the mixture sat in the tank for about 3 days before we figured out what the problem was.
So now I am forced with making sure the gas company compensates me for any problems I have had, any I could have, and I am beginning to think I should be due some compensation for the hassle. What I'd like to know is what you guys would do and what you would expect to get from them if this happened to you. I am not normally one who would be thinkig in terms of legal recourse, but they are adamant about handling everything now and not having to do anything if for instance my injectors fail a year from now.
I've read the thread and I agree with Kwick. Just thank the gas co for being responsible enough to take care of things upfront and go drive the damn thing. any problems you have in the future may or may not be related to this instance. litigating for "possible future problems" is one of my pet peaves. don't try to make them responsible for every squeak and rattle from now on.
First off, don't take it personal. Any settlement offer regarding almost anything will come with a release for future claims. You can thank the lawyers and insurance companies for that. I would suggest you contact the guy handling the matter for the station and tell him you've had some personal or family matters, or something like that come up that you need to deal with for the next several days or few weeks. Keep the lines of communication open and friendly.
Then use that time to form your opinion, get the engine checked out, or just make yourself feel better about things. Call Alliant Power (who built our injectors for International who sold the motor to Ford), call Bill at PHP, search the forms and dig up old threads where someone put gas in the tank. Call Ryan Casserly, Jim at Rosewood, the folks at Swamps, or as many as it takes to make you comfortable with your future course of action.
If your injectors start having problems in a year from now, who's to say they wouldn't have had those exact same issues anyway? I still think you'll be fine.
If you need an estimate showing lots of damage, go to the Ford house and tell them the story, you'll likely walk away with an estimate for big $$$, most if not all of which, is probably unnecessary.
Barney, you know I respect and appreciate your opinion, so thanks for chiming in. Maybe you're right. I guess I had just hoped that if I had problems within the next year or something that could be related to this that I would have somehing to fall back on, but hey don't want to do that. Im not looking for anything real long term, just a little assurance/ insurance for the immediate future. I really don't want to turn this into a situation where it looks like i am trying to take advantage. Thanks for your input.
I can't add much more than what those above have said but if this would have happened to an older engine that used a fuel injection pump that made the high fuel pressure in the pump using the diesel fuel as lubrication, you may not have driven 30 miles before something when badly wrong. If you didn't drive your truck hard for those few miles, I doubt that anything was hurt from the fuel mix. Might have even cleaned some residue off the injectors....
You could always go to your local ford dealership and talk to the service manager to see what they would recommend. Ideally, you would do all the work at the same place and not let on to the rep. that everything was ok.

If what you want is the peace of mind, this is your option. They will likely tell you a new motor is needed.
It's hard to be the bigger person is this type of situation. You don't want to be the one screwing someone but don't want to get screwed in the process.
I would take it to the dealer and have them go through it. This gives at least some kind of warranty for future problems that may occur.

this they will most likely give you worst case senario which should cover all future expenses.
i dont know enough to say that everything will be fine...so if i were in your shoes i would be looking for the worst case!!!
Personally i would talk to as many people that work on diesel trucks, have knowledge on them, and people that have had this problem.
I don't think i could hold them for things that they did not cause
if you haven't already talked to a lawyer, talk to your JAG office, maybe they can talk to the company rep about things, or just let you know what you should do to protect yourself. AND at this point I would rake them over the coals for their audaity, I mean cmon they messed up, get a brand new engine out of it, with a new turbo (it might have overheated), new injectors, and a NICE RENTAL TRUCK AND FREE FUEL IN IT (purchased at thier main competition at their cost) till your truck is done. You sir have played nice and are going to be FUBAR without a sayso. just my 2cents

I now know all I need to know about you, sir.
It's only with those here who are honorable men that I wish to associate.
Thanks everyone for sharing your opinions on this. I surely didn't mean to start a thread that would cause people to harbor bad feelings towards each other. I know this is a touchy subject, though, and something that people are going to be very strongly opinionated about. I want to make sure that y'all understand that this isn't a situation I am happy to be in. I am not and have never been the type of person to take advantage and just like most of you I HATE hearing stories about how litigious our society has become. But, I also think it is easy for someone to claim to take the high road when they aren't the ones who have been hurt, had their property damaged, etc.
I believe 95% of us are here for the same reason, we love our trucks. We want to do everything we can to make our truck run as well as it can. There is the exception here who beat the hell out of their truck in an attempt to make it faster, but they accept those risks and know what kind of costs are associated with them.
I am part of the former group, who spends the extra money to use the highest quality synthetic oil - and still changes it every 5000 miles. I use Diesel Kleen because I'm concerned about the lack of lubricity in ULSD (I know it may not make a bit of difference, but it all comes back to peace of mind). Yeah, I run a PHP chip, but I have mild tunes that are really only for towing. I got gauges long before I ever considered a chip. I also went with PHP over more popular tuners here because, true or not, I felt like their tunes were safer. I don't abuse my truck - I rarely ever run it over 2000rpm if I'm not towing. I have intended since the day I bought this truck to make it last - which is why I treat the truck the way I do.
So yeah, it really does **** me off when someone else's negligence could possibly affect the durability of my engine. So now I'm stuck trying to decide whether I want to be the kind of person that everyone hates, or the kind of person who potentially gets screwed because he actually has a conscience. I still don't know what I'm going to do, but I hope that whatever I decide doesn't affect the friendships I have formed here.
