You have a truck. Offer to clean garages and haul off trash. Clean rain gutters, paint....
One thing I've thought about doing in the past......
something that people dread doing.......
something that they might pay a few bucks for you to do it for them.....
Offer to pick up the dog poop in the back yard. All you need is a few trash bags, some rubber gloves (actually, those are optional), a bucket, and a pooper scooper. Leave your pride at home and make some money.
Landscaping's a good business for starting out because there's a lot you can do without having to spend a lot on equipment or worrying too much about things like insurance.

If you can get the word out ( post on those little cards in local stores etc), you might be able to pick up general work with older homeowners (like me), especially those with a few acres.
List your strong points ( good size, strong, ambitous, and have experience with ....). Also put down an hourly rate for basic work ( you can always say that you won't do some jobs for that price). And don't get hooked omto driving 50 miles for a 2 hour job.
If you have references, even better.
My wife used to get jobs like berry picking in the summer, but I don't know if that kind of work is still around.
If you have the truck, offer to haul away junk. Haul it to a reclaimation center and sell the metal. Clean out basements for people, or attics. Put an ad in the local paper or post one in the local supermarket: " Odd Jobs ", etc. Good luck!

No true at all my friend. You will need a to study and take a state certified test to obtain a pesticide license which you will need to obtain your training hours and credits to keep it, general liability insurance, auto insurance depending on the properties you maintain, in 2011 you will need to be a certified landscape contractor to do any work over 2500 a year, be an LLC, and a business license. Not to mention buying the equipment that takes to do it right. the list goes on
Do a little research in your community and find the niche that's waiting to be filled, there's always one to be pioneered or improved. I'm not familiar with Small Business in North Carolina, but perhaps there is a non profit small business development center in your community offering programs geared for "young entrepreneurs" which may offer guidance on crafting a business plan and financial assistance to get you started.
The more time invested in research and planning will increase your odds of survival.
