Basic carb question - 460 rookie

Long story short, my old lady commandeered a 1978 F250 Camper Edition 2WD. It is absolutely gorgeous and has a 460 in it. All stock with 149k. I'm insanely jealous.

Disclaimer - Most of my knowledge about engines, whcih isn't a whole lot to begin with, has made the transition from carburators to fuel injection and I forgot about a lot of the things I used to do to carburated cars.

I'm starting with the basics, tightening the belts, replacing vacuum lines, etc. I also need to change the fuel filter. While I'm in there this thing runs rich IMO. Smells like gas all the time. I'm thinking I need to lean it out a bit but do not want to get in over my head trying.

Where is 'the screw'? Is there only one screw? Which way would I turn it to lean it out? The goal is to be able to set it back to how it was before I started monkeying around with it. Stock 4-barrell carb.

Thanks

There are 2 needle screws at the base of the carb. The easiest way to tune the carb is to start the truck screw the screws in all the way and then back them out until the truck starts to run bad. Count the number of turns and then cut them in half and try that. That is what I have always done.

You should use a vacuum gauge to dial in the idle mixture.

Thanks for the vote of confidence 312. I think I can handle it. I just like to be informed before I begin a project. That whole trial and error/wasting time thing...

For the rest of you, thanks for the info!
