MSD ignitions seem to be the most popular upgrade, but I have always heard that there quality and durability isnt great. Anyone have a Jacobs ignition system?? My mechanic buddies, as well as the local Ford parts guy say that if I do upgrade, it should be a Jacobs. http://www.4wheelparts.com/product2....s=JACO&cat=PER
If you do a search on here you should find a few threads.
I read one a couple of days ago, but cannot remember what forum/thread it was.
It seems the general consensus here is that the Jacobs suck. That they are not worth it and youshould go with MSD. That is what I remember anyway. I could be all wet. Run the search on Jacobs and I am sure you will find quite a bit.
I've got two 78's running MSD with no problems. My daily driver has the 6A and my mud truck has the 6AL. The 6AL has a built in rev-limiter so incase something breaks, I won't over rev the motor. You can also install an ignition kill switch (anti-theft) very easily with these. Might save a couple bucks on your auto insurance.
I just installed an MSD ignition in my '80 fullsize Bronco. I had the factory Duraspark II ignition w/vacuum advance and had nothing but problems...until I put the MSD ignition in! I highly recommend the MSD ignition for anyone looking to upgrade their ignition system. This is just my opinion..I've never owned a Jacobs system but read some posts in FTE that warned not to purchase a Jacobs ignition. They both (Jacobs & MSD) come with a heafty price tag but I don't regret letting go of the cash one bit!
My Bronco moves down the road pretty quick now!
Ok, so it sounds like my friends havent been 'enlightened'. So, you all like the MSD. How much did you guy drop out of your wallet for these systems? Also, Im looking to pick up some mpg...did you guys get better mileage as a result?? Id love the extra power, but foremost better mileage (my girl takes 93 and thats running about $1.82 up here in MA). TIA
Do any of you guys experience static interference or anything?? I was always taught that the less the resistance, more interference was the trade-off. Yes? No? Maybe?
I have always run 8-9mm wires on all of my vehicles. I have never had any problems that I have noticed. I have had less problems that with the stock wires, but that may be true of any size aftermarket wire............
