exhaust

So what is worth doing to the ex exhaust wise and how much is just by choice? i have an 01 v10 4x4 limited and am carefully planing my mods and exhaust is on the list. so does it really benefit to do the headers y pipe and full exhaust or just the y pipe and exhaust? i have no broken studs i can tell and no exhaust leaks but I Am getting this ready to do some towing of my tt and my mods will include, regear to 4.30's from 3.73's v/b spring mod. new shocks (undecided witch yet) steering stabilizer. helwig, all new front end bushings a sct3 or whatever it is from mike at 5star. I know the restricted y pipe is a good upgrade but should i really consider an entire new exhaust?

The gears are a great choice. The difference you feel will be huge. don't forget to recalibrate the speedo or you might get a ticket.

The spring swap is also a good one and is on my list when money is available. Many people on here go with Bilstein shocks. I went with Monroe Reflex and they seem to work fine for me, but I would go with Bilsteins if I did it again.

Besides the y-pipe, the muffler is the most restrictive portion of the exhaust. The cat flows free enough to handle any volume you throw at it...unless you were to add a turbo or supercharger, but it doesn't sound like you want to go there.

Long tube headers will replace your y-pipe and get you more torque/HP across a wider range of RPMs. Shorties typically only add to the higher RPMs, say 3500+, and the y-pipe will have to be dealt with separately.

I recommend getting a free-flowing muffler with the sound to your liking; however most people re disappointed because the v-10 doesn't sound "bigger" than the v-8 so don't expect it. Most say it actually sounds more like a v-6. Here's a link to TeamMudd's, a fellow FTE member, sounds page: Sound & Video Clips

I went with the Flowmaster 70BB II because it fit in the stock location without replacing the pipes and it is large enough to handle the heat and volume of exhaust. It's also mild in comparison to most others but has a nice mellow rumble at idle. Most importantly, it doesn't drone inside the cab when cruising on the highway, which is kind of a hit or miss issue with mufflers on the Ex.

Unless they are in bad shape or you just prefer stainless, the pipes after the cat are about 2-7/8", and like the cat, flow is more than adequate. Plus they are mandrel bent. If you choose to replace the pipes, be careful you don't go more than 3". Unlike the diesel, on the gasser you will reach a point of diminishing return and actually reduce your torgue.

Good luck and happy modding,
Stew

If you contact FTE member Furian, he is putting together a group buy on Thorley long-tube headers at a really good price. I bought mine from the same guy he is dealing with on a separate deal. I will get them this week and hopefully can find time to install in the next few weeks.

It was Ex03AK who started the thread on the special buy of Doug Thorley long-tube headers for the 6.8L 2V engine... Here's the thread.
