I posted a few weeks ago about a leaky axle seal and I just got around to changing it out today. When I pulled the wheel and was about to pull out the axle, this is what I found.
first off, that looks like a 9" rear. You have to press off the bearing to get to the seal.It will usualy ruin the bearing.Second, that looks like a bad axle bearing to me,prob. what caused the leak.you will need to pull the axle shaft out to determin what style of bearing you have.tapered roller or sealed ball.if you have acces to a shop press it is a fairly simple job.If you dont have a press you will have to have a shop do the press work for you.
Looks like a Ford 9" and the bearing is bad not just the seal. There are two different style bearings. It could be either one.
The early style is a sealed ball bearing. With this one the axle seal is pressed in the housing inboard of the bearing and can be changed just by pulling the axle out and prying out the old seal. The bearing is pressed onto the axle shaft.
The later style is a roller bearing with the seal outboard of the bearing. To replace this seal you have to remove the bearing and that usually trashes the bearing.
In your case that's probably inconsequential because whichever bearing you have it looks like you need to replace it.
I noticed a dribble of oil from the other side too so both shafts are sitting at NAPA waiting for new seals and bearings to be pressed on. What a silly design. On the other side, the seal is gone, but the bearing looks great. The bearing will likely get trashed in the process of putting on the new bearing.
