i have a 2002 with 130,000 miles. First year of the new independant suspensioni in rear. Smoother than a car on the highwy. VEry nice ride. Neer had a transmission problem. I drain the pan, remove and clean out pan and magenet and add the 5 quarts of oil every 40k miles. Some have had problems, but i would not say a bunch more than any other SUV.
my wife and i just bought an 02 a week and a half ago. (will be posting pics soon), couldn't be happier with it, she went from a full size bronco to a neon now to an explorer. and it has all the bells and whistles. full leather, power everything, sun/moon roof, tvs for the kids and black with grey trim! she says she feels like a mom in it instead of a kid in the neon! just have to get the last recall done on it and she should be good to go!
all cars have recalls that are found after production. my wifes needs the speed control recall done on it, i guess that ford found that some master cylinders leaked on the wiring harness causing a short and sudden acceleration. the recall is putting a fusable link in the harness to prevent that from happening.
the recall takes 3 minutes. it is a fuse link to kill power to the cruse control switch on the master cylinder. if the switch leaks, a drop of oil can hit the hot wire and cause a fire. almost all ford trucks and some cars had this in the last 10 years. fix is simple.
