the switch on the end of the master cylinder would leak and cause fires

i'll check into that then...

i've also heard rumors of issues with cab mounts on these trucks splitting - any truth to those? would hate to wait until i tweak the cab to find out

Ya get that cruise recall done. Mine was working fine but I got paranoid seeing all the fires the cruise caused and burnt nice trucks up so I got it done. Takes a couple minutes and makes a mess of the wiring there though.

Superchips 1705 MAX Micro Tuner 94-03 7.3 Powerstroke: eBay Motors (item 320536305951 end time May-27-10 22:02:36 PDT)

This is the one I have. Didn't expect it to be this cheap. Most are going for more on ebay. I'll match this offer on mine. just search superchip 1705 and you'll get 5 or so that come up. I don't have the instructions on it but I think they can be obtained from their website. It's very easy to use.

It's a good tuner overall. I borrowed a Hyperchit from a buddy and i couldn't tell a difference over stock. The superchip you can actually tell a performance difference.

None of these tuners hold a candle to a good chip from any of the big 3 companies performance wise. But you cannot pull codes with them...maybe you can i don't know for sure.

redone1 - pm (finally figgered it out) sent...

would love one day to 'chip' these from one of the big-3 but right now, as you noted, code reading is the main driving force... actually the excursion may never get mod'ed unless i can help the whimpy shift points/transmission sliding... i hear these are well known for smoking trannys but still have less than 65k on this 01 - there's extra slip... slip may be a mis-nomer it honestly feels like 'soft shifting' and/or 'gear hunting' rather than outright slippage...

maybe i need to add a tranny cooler and swap to a hi-po torque converter....

My uncles father inlaw just had his 01 auto tranny go out with 72k on it. Just a heads up.

wishful thinking...? none of us are guilty of that...

we *all* surely thought we'd really improve our mileage when we added those grossly oversized tires... i mean gee... it increased our final drive ratio.. right...? :-)

and those exhaust mods... not a *thing* about sound quality... hehehe

speaking of "sound" getting a nasty high pitched squeak/chirp out of the ol' 96 van... not a very happy sound... doesn't occur at idle... but is distinct at anything much above probably 1000 - 1100 rpm... it's not the turbo (i don't think) and if i hadn't had the belt and water pump replaced about 1500 miles ago, i'd be suspicious of those - figuring i'm past the "junk from the factory" syndrome w/ that many miles...? may try some belt dressing, but i don't like that.. never used or "needed" belt dressing until i bought this van... and i've owned alot of (my wife would even say too many) vehicles over the years... i think i have 7 plus the 3 psd's at the moment... :-) yeah i'm a junkie
they're mostly all old crap... but hey... when they're out of warranty it's ok to take them apart to see how they work... right?

oh crap...

i found the chirping sound on the E350... it's on the passenger side... right at the alternator... can't quite tell if it's the alternator, or the tensioner pulley assy below it... sounds like a bearing going... can add spray lube (no i didn't use wd40) and it quiets down for a period of time then starts back... even shutting the engine down, i can't get the can o' spray far enough down in there to reliably hit only one spot, so i can't determine who is making the racket... the tensioner or the alternator... the tensioner is bouncing a fair amount (not wildly, but it's deviating by at least an 1/8" on occassion) so i'm really hoping it's the culprit as i really don't want to think about the expense or what's involved in sliding a new alternator on top of that engine - looks almost like i'd have to remove the grill and air cleaner to make a big enough hole to jerk it out!...

oh crap....

well here we go...

got the tuner (thanks redone1!!!) and pulled codes...

got an 0675, 0677 and 1744 figured the glowplugs were tossing some of the codes - was suspecting the glowplug controller... guess i'll watch that now...

and i knew the torque converter had shown some slippage issues in the past... cleared 'em and we'll see now if the codes are actually the result of true consistent issues, or the result of the truck being cranked w/o waiting for the glowplugs, or just an occasional tranny slip...

hmmmm

still staring at the E350 in my driveway... gotta order/pick-up the drivebelt tensioner ***'y it seems... trying to decide if i want to take on converting to the two pulley version or not...

hmmmmm
