Unhappy 255HP Commander 351

Just bought an '80 Bronco. Looked under the hood and the valve covers say "255HP Commander (powered by Ford) 351."
So what the hell engine do I have??? I think it's a marine engine, but is it a good engine? I like the HP rating...
So is it a 351W or a 351C? Hoping it's a W since I already have a 4bbl intake for a W.
Anyone know the max HP rpm? Torque spec and RPM?

Thanks...

I did a quick search and it is definitely a marine engine, partially interchangeable with the 351 Windsor. Someone must have gotten one cheap and put it in your truck. I have not found any info on the specs yet.
Do a "google search" and you will get many pages of stuff to sort through.

Hope that helps.

It's the marine engine. I seem to remember Ford and Mopar having a bit of fuss over Ford's use of "Commander" on those engines vs. Mopar's name of "Commando".

Hi,

I got a boat. the engine in it is a 350 4 barrel chevy engine , but it works the same. My engine is the exact same thing as a truck engine but it's says 260 HP. Those Boats engine are made by chevy for mercruiser powered Boat and yours probably comes from a OMC powered Boat.

Ford make the motors for OMC . and it's giving 255 HP.

You won't have 255 HP in you truck. The only reason that it's says 255 HP is because the HP in a boat in not calculated the same as a truck.

In a Truck the HP is calculated at the end of the Drive TRain. that means , Motor, transmission, shaft, differential, wheels. So you lose some power at the end.

In a Boat the HP is calculated strait from the motor to the stern drive . so there is no transmission or differential. so you got almost no lost of power. this is why they get 255 HP of that engine in a boat.

Thanks for the info.
I thought engine ratings were based on accessories only because I know Ford's new 5.4L doesn't put 260HP at the rear wheels. I thought the ratings were flywheel HP. I can see the parasitic effects of the power steering pump and more restrictive cooling system (radiator vs. the whole river) robbing some HP. But you're right. It sure does not feel like 255HP right now. I'm wondering if it had a 4bbl carb and open exhaust when it reached 255HP. Now that it's running a tired 2bbl and standard 2-1 exhaust it's probably choking...
