I made a guage out of a piece of tubing. There are two sliders that have about a 10" 5/8 piece at right angles to the main tube. The ends have a point.
I jack up the tires and make a sharp chauk line by spinning the tires. I then lower it and set the guage so the two pointers touch the line on both tires in the front. I move the guage to the rear of the tires and compare the difference. If not to specs, you turn the drag link adjuster and re-check. If you take your time, you can get it exact.
I used a tape measure. measure the same point front and rear of the tire. drive up and down the driveway a few times, then recheck. Go for 1/16 inch for new tie-rods and steering bearings, 1/4 for parts with some wear. The idea is that the slack in the steering is taken up when the truck is moving and the wheels are straight ahead when under way.
