400 rebuild

I have a 78' F250 with a 400. Not sure if it has 165,000 or 265,000 on the motor. Anyway, I'm doing a rebuild.

My shop guy is saying go with a Edlebrock Street Master, (not sure what model), a cleveland 4v cam, MSD control, and a 650 quick fuel carm.

What timing set should I go with and does anyone have any better suggestions or tried this setup?

Also anyone have the street master part number or description?

I've found one on line and it is a street Master 400.

Thanks for the help.

How do you plan on using the truck? Do you want it to be a daily driver or more high performance? There are several differnt ways to go with that motor these days.

Farm truck, maybe once or twice a week to work...

I would say that if the truck will be pulling trailers and hauling stuff around the farm, for the most part, i would say that you would want to build the engine to have a decent torque curve. I am running a '71 400 in a 78 ranger 150, i used the edelbrock performer intake #2171 and it gives good higher end performance and also builds really good low end torque. I also am using an edelbrock 600 carb. The cam in mine is stock, because i believe this motor had strait up timing in it, it was not till later that ford used the retarted timing in this motor. Are you going to use headers or exhaust manifolds? Headers will help it breathe much better and give better power than manifolds.

What kind of gas mileage you get with yours?

I have not driven it enough to have an accurate number for you, but from what i was getting with the 351m motor that was in it and based on the mileage from that motor with a two barrel carb and stock exhaust manifolds on it, this motor should produce around 12 to15 mpg. That is as long as i keep my foot out of the secondaries!!! This 400 has long tube headers on it, that is why i mentioned the stock manifolds.
