the 351-m has a different bolt pattern for the trans. housing than a 302. A 460 is the same as the 351-m , I had one in my 79 bronco for a number of years. I'm not sure ,but I think you would need trans.parts from a early bronco to make it work . I never was in to 4/4s that much to really know, but I'm sure sombody can help you.
I'm in parts gathering mode on a similar swap. I'm going Windsor, but the same all applies. I got a C6 from an 80's 4x4 so I didn't have to tear through two trannies to make on. If you can't get one, which I did have some trouble finding one that was in my area, you can always take a 2wd trans and switch out the tailshaft from your other trans and make it 4x4. I haven't gotten to the motor mount towers yet, but my understanding is that they do not have to be changed. The inline 6 motors also share the bell, so they are another option for parts.
As to the motor having enough power, you could build it up a bit, but it depends what you expect from it. General driver type, it may do ok, but if you want to tow at all, not as good. If it is only for mileage, you may well be disappointed as it will have to work a bit harder to get the truck moving vs the 351 that is there now.

but a 351 Windsor is the same as a 302 sharing the same bell housing, and motor mounts, being a 78 is it the original engine? has there been any mods to the truck that you can tell? I'm sure you can get an adapter from advanced adapters to mate the trany to the 302 if it is a 335 (351m 351c)series, and there are tons of performance parts for the 302, so if you have the money then power is not a problem
Don't really see the point in spending $400 on an adapter when I can have the whole trans for less. I have talked to them in the past about adapters for the Cummins, but they weren't too interested in that market much. The indication I got from them was that if it wasn't in their catalog, and you don't want to spend major dollars, they don't have it. They tend to cater to the jeep/landcruiser/street rod markets. I have seen FE to Gm adapters, they have a 302 to GM adapter, some stuff for Broncos, but not for switching a Ford for Ford.
Many of the adapters for the Cummins run about $700 or so, but they also come with most everything needed to do the switch (as far as trans goes) They have become a popular swap, so that is the going rate, not a special price.

ah that sucks, I've never dealt with them, so this is great info for the future if I ever have to lol
They have a lot of cool stuff, just not quite everything like has become their legend... If you wanted one bad enough, I'm sure they could make one, just expect to pay well for it.
