front end death shake

iv seen other posts about a death shake, but idk if its the same as what im talkin bout. it doesnt happen often bout when it does its bad. its usuallly at 45+ mph and after i hit a bad bump in the road it seems it sets it off. it feels like the front of my truck is boucing off the ground. back and forth like left right left right...... and wont stop till i slow down to almost nothing. it never happened untill after i did a dana 60 swap. it hasnt happened since right after the install, and now it happened yesterday and today. any thoughts? thanks.

do you have a big dead spot in your steering box? If the steering gear is loose, then a bump will definitely set of crazy vibrations. With the lift, im guessing you have big tires too, I'd check the steerin box and tighten it up if you can, and then look into a good steering stabilizer. Don't get one with two stabilizers in a kit, as that tends to be a bit too much valve resistance for the truck to bring the steering around to straight after a turn. I drove a 4wd excursion with a stabilizer kit on it with two stabilizers on it with 37's i believe, and you had to crank it to turn and then you had to straighten it back out after the turn or else you'd catch the ditch off the side of the road because the stabilizers would hold the steering over.

Also, was the axle rebuilt? because heavily worn wheel bearings can give alot of vibration as well. Those things should take care of any front end shakes, unless you installed the D60 without a panhard bar or something crazy hah. Hope that helps bud

I had a jeep several years ago with lots of lift and big tires. It started doing the same thing. Randomly at no particular speed it would just start shaking like a dog $h!!t!n a peach seed. I mean this thing would rattle your bones loose. I took it EVERYWHERE for diagnosis and treatment because I sure as heck couldn't figure it out and neither could the mechanics. Finally I sold it to a guy(he knew about the problem) so he could deal with it. I never found out what it was. So in short, I don't know either and can't help but I feel your pain brother.

I have a F350 so little different front axle but looks like you swapped it out already on your F250. Had the exact same thing happen to me. There is a track bar that goes from one side of the axle to the crossmember under the motor. The bushings in the end get wore and that causes the axle to jump all over the place when you hit a bump for some reason. I picked up the bushing at dealership and pressed them in. Think they were like $10 each. Instantly stopped the problem. I know its spooky when it did it though. And mine only did it around 45ish when you hit a bump. But id start with the track bar if you have one after the axle swap. If you dont have one Id install one.

well maybe its the trac bar, i installed it but i know it was a little loose. also with the lift its angle bit. it originally mounted on the bottem side of the axle, but i mad a little bracket thing so it mounted on the top, its better but still angled. will that make a diffence. and i guess ill through on that steering stabalizer that iv been procrastinating about for 2 years lol. thanks guys . il see if any of those make a difference. though it happens so far and few between it might take a while to see if it helps.

With a lift it will throw the angle off a little, but when mine shook like that I there was only a little slop in the track bar bushings. And with new bushing it solved my problem. The factory angle is just slightly tilted down towrds the axle.

Wheel bearings, too...

On a stock 350, my death shake was due to a loose front wheel bearing. Same symptoms and initiation. So check the bearings, too...

you need to get the track bar fixed. needs to be in the stock mounting location and the angle of the trac bar needs to be at the same angle as teh steering linkage going to the tie rods. odds are you need a longer one with a 6 inch lift. that or a trac bar drop brakcet.

Haven't had it yet on mine, but I got a track bar drop bracket with the RSK, so hopefully I'll be OK.

You probably at least need a tie rod end. Only way to tell all is to get the truck on jack stands and start investigating.

Not sure why people insist on lifting these things so much but since that's already done you definitly need to fix the trac bar. It does need to be in the stock locations like was already said and roughly the same angle as the tie rod. It will NOT work any other way. Moog makes a 2 piece poly bushing kit for it that is stupid easy to put in. Get those. And torque the bolts when you are done. Call your lift manufacturer too and ask them about a longer one.

What type of lift was it? Springs or body? Did ou also put the taller f350 lift blocks in the back? I hope so. If your truck is sitting level then I guarantee you that your caster angle is way off. It's designed to be higher in the back when empty. Caster is what keeps you going straight and returns the wheel to center.

Also how are your spring bushing? And the shackle bushings? They are very important to fixing this problem. If your front shackles are metal to metal then nothing you replace will fix this problem. Steering stabilizers are only for trucks with problems too. I have taken mine off since I replaced all teh bushings and it drives perfectly now. Better than new actually.

I had a similar problem with a Jeep 4X4 a few years ago. Problem turned out to be a dried out stiff axle u-joint. It had a very limited range of motion. Worked fine until I hit a bump, then it would get stuck and like to shake my teeth out. When I slowed way down it would free up and act fine until the next big bump in the road.
