ccv mod question

Hey guys I have read posts on the CCV mod and kept thinking about big rigs. Tractor trailers have the vent right under the engine compartment. Why do you have to run the hose to the back of the truck?? And not just under the engine? Would I be able to run it under the engine compartment and still get the same results??

Thanks
-AJ

AJ, the results would be the same, the reason for running out the a$$ is for smell control...that burnt oil smell will come directly into the cab if just stubbed under the engine bay...at least that's my opinion...

You'd get the same result, most run it back to keep the small amount of smoke or possible oil draining/venting as far away as possible so you dont smell it or step in it, or blow it all over your truck...

A draft tube will let some of the blowby out, but not as much if you left the factory CCV in place. So, by bypassing the factory system, you are leaving (somewhat) more crud in the crankcase.

Is the assumption with the CCV mod that because the truck holds a lot of oil and it is changed frequently that the junk that is normally sucked back into the engine won't hurt if left in the crankcase? A crankcase vent isn't only about pollution - there's water and other byproducts of combustion you're trying to remove from the crankcase.

No we want to keep all that crap out of there, gets sucked straight into the turbo from the vent...alot of these guys run a catch can and reroute the CCV back into the OEM spot to maintain the Factory setup, but get rid of the contaminents...

A catch can makes a lot of sense - I have seen a variety of homemade ones, and the idea of intercepting all the gross sludge (by whatever method) is a great one. Thanks!

what goes in place of the old hose? So there wont be a hole in your intake hose? Ive seen kits out there but figured it would be quick and easy just routing it near the engine.

Honestly, the only thing I catch in my CCV filter is oil and just a very, very small amount of water. And not that much oil either. About a tablespoon every 5000 miles or so. But a tablespoon of oil as vapor being circulated around your IC pipes and boots can cause a oily mess and can cause your boots to slip off over time.

Or you can replace the entire piece with a scrap of 4" exhaust tubing.

Where is that filter assembly mounted under the truck? And how far back do you go with the outlet hose? One last thing did you buy that filter somewhere or build it yourself?

The filter is mounted under the driver's door. The outlet hose from the filter goes about a foot towards the rear of the filter. I built the filter myself. I've built a few filters for others - gotten pretty good at it now.
