I bought this 1989 E-150 about a month ago and have driven it about 300 miles. I had to change the in tank fuel pump in the front tank and haven't been brave enough to switch tanks yet. The van had sat for a few years prior to my buying it.
After I changed the entire hanger assemby with new pump, the van ran like a champ for a couple hundred miles.
Then this morning, when I went to drive it, it ran fine for about 5 minutes. Then when I tried to go to idle in a parking stall, it sputtered until it died and the check engine light lit up. I turned the key off for a minute and then turned it back to on and the fuel pump relay did a bunch of on/off/on/off/on chattering and the fuel pumps never shut off ( normally they run for a about a second with the key on and the engine off).
I turned it off and back to on and the fuel pumps ran for a bried period and the relay wasnt chattering. I started it without issue. It ran fine, I put it in drive and made the mile trek home.
But it is doing the same things again. When I got it running again in the driveway, it actually rpm'ed up to about 1800 (estimate -- no tach). And then it sputtered and died.
my 95 was the exact same way but check all grounds and the ground wire i had trouble with was the wire going to the fender near the battery not the 1 on the battery the 1 going to the fender just see if yours have that 1 .
