I own a 1990 Ford Ranger. Just recently lost the key to the truck. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get a duppilcate set. I purchased the truck second hand. Called the local dealer they said they only have key codes for 96' or newer trucks. They also said if I new where the truck was purchased they might have the key code on file at that dealership. How would I track that info. down?? Any help would be great thanks.... Helgy
Yep, locksmith is the only way to go. Call around and get the best price. I know here they get about $35 to get the keys out so I'd figure atleast $50 to do open it and make you a set. Get 2 ignition keys and 3 door keys (if it takes a different one) so you'll have one for your wallet.
Lost keys is a easy fix...take your vin number and your ownership papers to either any ford dealer or any keysmith and they will make from that..here it cost 16.00...the newer trucks with computer keys cost around 80,00!! feel lucky!!
No not really but almost all locksmiths have a computer that will tell them what the key cut is based upon the vin number...they will want proof it's your truck as well. If you don't have a locksmith who has this vin computer then any ford dealership will!
At a last ditch effort I was looking through the owners manual to see what dealership the truck came from, I came across an old computer puch card that had all the info I needed. I'll be stopping at the nearby dealership Mon. to get the new keys.... Again thanks for the help..
Sorry but locksmiths cannot make keys from the vin. The vin tells the dealer all about the truck including the key codes. I doubt if the dealer has the code, Ford doesn't keep codes on file they let the dealers that sell the truck keep them. Ford only the past few years has kept them on all. In my area (RI) we charge $85.00
Sorry I should have added that the codes can be had at the dealership and then a good locksmith can cut the key with these codes...I just did it and it cost 18.00... I also had a 2002 computer key made for my new Ranger..all I did was ask them to cut me a new key the last time I took it in for warrenty service...since they want me to return they programmed it for nothing... depends on weather they want your business or not
