I win!!! for most destroyed turbo!

I just smoked my turbo this morning. I turned a corner and there was a little car behind me a little ways back, took the corner hard and was coming up on me quick. I could see stickers on the windshield so knew it was still a dealer car(looked like a Nissan Altima). He tried passing me, but backed off at 90mph. He tried again and at about 100 mph the carnaged happened. Heard a few weird noises and then I couldn't see behind me due to the HUGE cloud of white smoke.
Just got the turbo off, the compressor wheel rubbed hard and is shot; I looked to see the condition of the turbine wheel and guess I'll have to be fishing it out of my exhaust. It sheared the shaft and there is nothing there.

I'm in the process of figuring out my options, if it can be rebuilt and cost, or just buy new. If anyone has any good leads, let me know!

I'll get pictures up later.

You smoked a 38r?

I would be crying right now! Those puppies are too expensive to be destroying!

Thanks for the link Ron. I know the 42R is out of the budget right now, cuz then I'd need hybrids to go with it. Plus, I don't even want to attempt to sell my wife on it...

I just got off the phone, I have a brand new 38R coming from Ohio for $1427.57 with a 1 year warranty. I hate spending the money now cuz cash is tight, but the 38R runs too well, especially when towing, it'd be hard to go back to a stocker. The center section was $1000, then I put my housings on it.

Apparently the 38R is NOT rebuild-able. I keep hearing both ways. So now I'll have one sitting around for parts, the housing anyway.

Oh, the car got away. It was starting to pull away but I was letting out because things weren't sounding right. But I figured that's not too bad for an 12 year old 8000# truck against a brand new 4000# car that is suppose to go fast. I guess they don't have speed limiters on them anymore??

I also have to fix my belt tensioner. It let go as well. That could have been bad, because it pulled right off, could have gotten into the fan and radiator.

i think they shut down at 110 MPH...dave at DI can get some of them rebuilt..but i think yours is too far gone...Dave is also running a sale...1600 for turbo pedistal and outlet...probably could have got just the turbo a little cheaper..how old was yours?

I bought mine used a year ago. There was a guy on here that was having a fire sale on a bunch from their work trucks. It never sounded completely right from the start. At certain boost ranges it made weird noises, and towing hard it had weird noises as well. I guess I'll find out how they are suppose to sound with a new one.

Take the pedistal and outlet off Dave's turbo and it'd probably be the same, maybe a little less than what I just paid. If you need a housing ever, let me know. I'll have one of each sitting around.

Adam, if/when you decide to, and to be clear, I dont want to take it from you, but I would love to see your old turbo. I can not imagine a reason why it would not be rebuildable, unless the housing is trashed...Are you going to rre?

Yep, I'll be going to RRE. The guy I called said that they aren't rebuild-able. It's in rough shape. The compressor wheel is no good, there is no turbine wheel. There is no shaft on the exhaust side. You can shake the turbo and it rattles, bearings are shot. Compressor housing might still be good, a little polishing on it possibly. I'll post some pictures hopefully this afternoon.

I thought they were rebuild-able, you just had to send it to Garrett.

Yea yea, I'll get them up when I get home. Now I have to clean up the oily mess it left. I have oil dripping out my tailpipe...

They are "rebuildable" in the sense that they just replace the center section and use the old housings. But the cost of that was $1000.
