The Microtuner works

Late yesterday (Friday), I received the Superchip Microtuner that I had ordered from the FTE online store. Superchips apparently packaged it without a manual. When I bitched at the online store -- after 5:00 PM Eastern time --, Ken worked late Friday night to fax one to me, in anticipation of sending the real one on Monday. *That's* service.

Anyway, I installed it using the "tow safe" mode, since we travel full time, hauling a 10,000 pound fifth wheeler.

Before installing it, I had made approximately a dozen test runs, not towing, over the period of a couple weeks on a mild uphill grade near here. I would get up to 50 mph in fifth gear, then floor it, timing how long it took to get to 65. Every time, it was between 13 and 15 seconds, usually right at 14.

I made three runs yesterday after the install. The first was nine seconds, and the other two were eight!

Just for grins, I'll probably load up the "off road" mode and see what difference that makes -- after I have an EGT gauge installed on Monday. (Of course, I won't tow in the "off road" mode. I'd like this old rig to last a few more years.)

Which one(tuner) did you get? I also have a 10,000 5th wheel. Sounds like it works well? How much $$$? Will it void my warranty on my 2003 7.3?

Did you get the manual yet? I asked Jolene yesterday if she had mailed one and she said she did. Just wanted to check in because I don't trust the US mail!

I got the 1705. I don't believe they have one for the 2003. Ken will know. Mine was about $342, with shipping.

I don't see how it can void a warranty, since you reflash the PCM to stock before taking the truck to the dealer for service. No footprint.

Okay, this question has probably been posted before but I can't find it. If the PSD is capable of so much more power and torque by simply installing a chip or reflashing the computer, then why does'nt Ford produce the engine this way? Is it because it causes faster wear on the engine? It seems that Ford would want to make the diesel have more horses/torque for advertisement puposes if anything. Is'nt that one of the reasons they went to the 6.0 (besides better emmissions). It seems I can spend a few grand in upgrades and outperform the 6.0. Why would anybody want to buy a 6.0 if all the 7.3 needs is a chip. I want to get a chip but am concerned about why Ford engineers did not produce the truck that way(chipped). There has to be a reason. Thanks in advance guys.

Limiting factors that the gov puts on engines has a lot to do with that. Such as emitions and all that stuff. Otherwise we'd all probably be running around with 500hp to our rear wheels!!!
