Gonna replace the crap muffler on my truck with a shiny new one. I'm running the 302 with a K&N intake, stock manifolds with 2.5" pipes that Y together before the muffler. No cats. The muffler would be single in single out 2.5". Just wonderin what people's thoughts were on the best one to get. I wanna maintain what little air flow I got (stupid cast iron manifolds) but I want a nice deep tone that'll rumble real nice and loud. Thanks for your input. BTW i was lookin at the flowmaster 40 series.
doesn't really matter what muffler you use,it won't be loud until you replace the cats with a high flow unit. some people have even ran no muffler and said it wasn't loud because of the cats.
I just straight piped my Bronco. The muffler had a huge hole so I dropped it and who needs the cats if you don't need to pass emissions. I like 'em loud.
The Flowmaster will sound OK if that's the sound you like. I have a 44 series on my truck and hate it. TexasGuy001 installed a Magnaflow that sounds exactly like what you're looking for. I'm pretty sure he has a link to a sound clip in his sig.
i have pacesetter shorty headers with a flowmaster y pipe with the flowmaster high flow cat hooked up to a flowmaster supper 44 muffler and two turn downs right off the muffler this thing is a plenty loud but not that tinny sounds its a real deep sound
I installed a Magnaflow #12279 on my '92 F350 w/5.8L engine last fall. Love the deep rumble with no droning issues. In hindsight I should have used a center/offset instead of the center/center version. The offset would have made the tailpipe aligniment a little easier.
If you are using 2.5" pipes I would recommend the #12286 or shorter version #12256. Both are the satin finish model. If you want flashy ($$) they also have them in polished finish as well.
Here is another vote for Magnaflow. I also like Dynomax. Anything straight through, chambered sucks. Another good option is turbo mufflers, which Dynomax also makes.
I vote against turn downs, unless it is a modified hot rod. Also, turndowns become annoying on a daily driver.
By the way ditch the KN intake. It doesn nothing but suck in warm air and depending on the kit doesn't seal up well at all.
