No additives here. Most don't recommend any additives. I use the biggest oil collecting pan I can find at the local auto parts store. I will get out about 12 or 13quarts out of the oil pan, the two oil rails and the HPOP hold another 3 quarts of oil and that won't drain out unless you pull the HPOP plug and suck it out.
What Viss said above, I got a 15 quart oil pan from Wall-mart years ago and their nice, priced very nice too, I believe under 12.00. Even before FTE, I never used an additive in the oil, its loaded with detergents and anti wear additives, no need for it, IMO. Get your truck up to operating temps then drain and refill and you'll be good.. Also from your post above, most Diesel oil now comes in 1 gallon jugs, get 4 and you'll have a quart left over for mid use refills, always good to have some top off with yaa, I do..
I usually just by the 5 gallon buckets. Plenty of oil in the bucket though tough to lift up to the funnel and I use the left over oil if I ever burn any oil off. If I don't burn any oil off and if I have any left over I just pore it in the tank on the next oil change.
As far as a waste oil container my truck is 4x4 with a leveling kit and a five gallon plastic bucket fits under there and works perfect. When done throw a lid on it and take it to the recycle collection center, don't have to pour it into anything else, just put a lid on and go.
Well, I also use a 5g bucket to store my old oil but I have to pore it into the bucket, so yea, there's another step but I don't want to lift my truck, I like it's height as it is but with enough height that's a good idea.
Like many have stated here, all you will need is a 15 quart oil change contanier (Walmart) to catch the oil from the oil pan and the oil filter. There are many good diesel oils to choose from:
Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo/Ford Motorcraft/ Mobil Delvac/Valvoline Blue to name a few. The Motorcraft Oil Filter Part # FL1995 is a good choice for $10 Dollars. If you use any of these diesel oils, no additives are required, these oils have the needed additives blended into the oil. One thing I always do is when you changing the oil filter, loosen it slightly then take a sharp punch and poke a hole in the bottom of the filter and let the 1-2 quarts of oil drain from the filter into the oil drain pan. You will find the oil change is much cleaner. While I'm waiting for the filter to drain, I then hit the 4-grease points on the front end with my grease gun. Don't forget to rub new oil on the new oil filter gasket and fill the new filter with fresh oil before installing. You will most likely need 15 quarts to bring you dipstick to the full level (Remember you will have a quart or so already in the new oil filter)
An easy way not to overfill is, if you buy Rotella/Delo/Delvac/Valvoline Blue you will buy 4-1 gallon jugs and when you oil change is completed, you will have 1 -quart of new oil in one of the jugs that should be left over. If you buy the Motorcraft 15w40 Diesel Oil, it comes in 5 quart jugs, you only need 3 jugs to complete a 15 quart oil change. At my Walmart, the Motorcraft 15w40 5- quart jugs is a good buy at $11.50 each and it is good oil. If you buy the Motorcraft Diesel Oil and Motorcraft Oil Filter, your oil change is less than $50.00 I have used Rotella/Motorcraft and Delo, are are good oils.
After changing the oil, let the truck run for a minute to ensure there are no leaks. After you shut the engine down, check the dipstick ensuring the oil level is at the full mark.
Also, in a side note, give the truck a couple minutes to let the oil settle back down into the oil pan. I have noticed that if I shut off the engine and check the oil right away then it'll register a bit lower then if I let it sit a couple minutes and let the oil drain back down.
i dont think walmart in canada carries motorcraft, i also know oil is a hell of a lot MORE expensive up here too, even though there is a freakin direct pipeline from fort mcmurray right into burnaby! (make sense of that)
i already have the motorcraft filter, i am thinking of picking up a floor jack, i would love to be able to fit a 5 gal bucket under
oh, we completely understand you, we can't figure out why those boz-o's can't uncap some tapped oil in Montanna and start pumping it directly to the stations instead of ripping us off too.
Getting tired of these idiots in congress.
But anyhow, before I go on a rampage.
No need for a bucket, just get something that will hold 15 quarts, drop the pan on the ground, drain and then poor it into a 5g bucket, you'll be set to go.
I remember looking at that bobistheoilguy demo a few years ago when i first got my truck. I had forgotten about it though and was in Autozone the other day looking at that Lucas oil demo. I was thinking, "I wonder what that would do to my PSD? It can't be bad." I know the consensus here is NO ADDITIVES ever, now I remember why. Thanks for posting that back up Robin.
another option for cleaner oil change is to install a fumoto valve. you can use smaller catch pans if needed or drain into your old one gallon containers.
