New owner 2006 6.0 Question

Finally pulled the trigger on this 2006 LWB Crew Cab 4x4 FX4 F350. It has 85000 Miles on it and it has been used as a truck should but mechanically taken care of. I have started doing all the services to make sure they were done correctly with the correct stuff. Question is: What brand/Type engine oil is the most trusted. Some I understand is just preference but some I'm sure the 6.0 dislikes.

Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w-40 is the gold standard next to Mobile 1 Synthetic for Turbo Diesels 5w-40.

Motorcraft filters only.

I do oil changes about every 5000km and use WalMArt Premium diesel 15-40. I also use Canadian Tire 20 litre pails of 15-40. Personally, I haven't heard of anyone attributing engine oil failure to the brand of motor oil used. I have heard of neglect causing issues, but not brand name being a factor.

make sure you flush tranny, and maybe think about both diffs & transfer case soon.

Just an FYI, but Rotella is not the oil it used to be and isn't really worth the dollar anymore.

The only real issue I've seen with off-brand cheap oils is harder starting in the cold. That, and you have to read the labels closely. You'd be amazed how much of that stuff is recycled...

lostru, welcome to FTE and congratulations on the new to you truck.

I would recommend that you utilize the forum's search feature and you will find more than you care to read regarding oil brands and weights. You will find that everyone has their own opinion and that there really isn't any consensus except that you should use a diesel rated oil and only Motorcraft or Racor filters.

Any major brand oil that is API certified CI-4 plus or CJ-4 is good to go. I and my truck prefer the 5W40 synthetics. Others prefer the 15W40 dino or just don't want to pay the extra money for the syn. Either way and 5,000 mile changes and OEM filters only.

I am getting 5w-40 synth CJ-4 at $23 a gallon.. that is virtually the same as Shell dino Rotella unless you buy in the bulk 5 gallon buckets.

Where in the world are you paying $23 for a gallon of rotella dino oil? I can buy it for $11 at my local walmart or menards. ON another note anybody using Mystic oil. You can get that at fleet farm or oreillys for like $20 for a 2 gallon jug. It is a semi synthetic 15-40

What are you basing this upon? I always thought Rotella was just a middle of the road oil. So what dollar is it not worth?

Gearloose said synthetic, not dino.

I think he is saying that he is buying synthetic 5-40 at 23 and saying that it is the same price as shell dino unless buying in bulk, or am I reading this wrong.

And the other question/post along this line....

I've been running the Mystic Synthetic blend 15W40 (JT8) in my truck for the last 40k miles. Yeah, I could go to a lighter 5W40 full synthetic...but at $21 for a 2 gallon jug, or $11 for the 1 gallon it's a pretty good price and the local farm/ranch store has the stuff on the shelf in several different package sizes (gallon, 2 gallon & 5 gallon). And most of all, it meets all the requirements for the 6.0L and I haven't had any issues. Though it would be wise to run some oil analysis before I said it was the best oil out there.

Think you can back that up with some facts and not just your opinion. Your opinion doesn't qualify as a testimonial to an oils quality or functional value!
