The EGR is an emissions system - not necessary for the engine to operate. But it only hurts everyone to run it like that. The system (when it's working and that's not hard or expensive to do) doesn't reduce the engine's power or efficiency significantly, so there's no good reason to delete it. It reduces the amount of nitrous oxides (NOx) produced by excessive combustion temperature by reintroducing a small amount of exhaust into the intake under precise conditions when it won't affect performance.
Seeing that your truck is an '82, go to the autoparts store and buy a little pack of the multi size rubber caps. Pop the hood, locate the EGR valve, pull the vacuum line attached to it. Trace that line to the "y" it comes off of. Use a rubber cap to plug the now unused outlet on the "y". You're done. Keep the hose and remember how it was plumbed, so come inpection time you can hook it right back up. You may want to put a cap on the EGR fitting also to keep crap from falling into the tiny hole.
Sounds like snake oil to me. All the industrial motors seem to survive just fine without it. My engine survived for I don't know how long without one. I installed one on my truck to pass SMOG, then defeated it. No problems to speak of at all.
well i dont know ill only be playing whith this if i cant get an efi set up for a good price. the carb on my truck dosnt work right and i hate it (see my efi post).
