efi questions

Alright i have perty much had it whith trying to get my carb to work properly (i have rebuilt it tryed replacing it whtih a reman and a new one) nothing has worked its still runs like *****. So i was going to ask a few questions. One how much does an EFI set up for a truck like mine (see sig) cost. Two how much of the emisions stuff does it eliminate(ie those silly plastic vac lines and the egr). And three how hard are they to maintain (will it be much harder for me to work on in my shop) and how much power will i gain. Thanks a bundle guys.

You won't gain much power or mileage, but you gain a WORLD of driveability, reliability, & ease of maintenance/repair. I've put at least 250K HARD miles on mine since I swapped to a '95 4.9L, and the biggest problem I've had was when the coil (the original '95) went out and left me 15mi from home for a couple of hours. It's SOOOOO much easier to let the computer tell you where the problem is than to guess the condition of the carb, & all the vac lines, and 1000 other possibilities. There are still a few lines on the EFI, but they're simple compared to the carb setup, and the computer monitors & controls them.

I spent $1300 total for the engine, all the accessories, wiring harnesses, fuel lines, air cleaner, y-pipe, gas tank, new belt, new oil, new plugs, & all new filters. Working alone, it took me ~4 days from the time I turned the carb engine off to the time I test-drove the EFI, but I spent a few months researching exactly where to splice the old & new wires, and finding the engine I wanted. If I had it to do again, I'd probably get a '96 MAF 4.9L (I didn't know it existed back then), but I doubt I'd go to a V-8 even though it wouldn't cost much more (engine mounts & radiator). If you think you might want a V-8, take a look at this one.
