My wifes 02 Escape V-6 keeps leaking brake fluid. At first I thought I had a bad caliper but after inspecting each one there is not leak. I seems to be coming from the master cyl. I used brakes parts cleaner on it because I could not determine where the leak was coming from. After a week I checked it again and still cannot tell. I think its at the cap since the whole cyl is wet. It does not leak alot and I noticed it when the light came on. SO I refilled and it took three months for the light to come on again.
A buddy told me there was a recall on this but I can't find anything. ANyone know if this is true. I hate to take it to the dealer since they will charge me just to look at it. I guess I could call them if no one knows for sure.
There is a tab at the top of the window for "Recalls/TSBs" to search there. I do not recall one for the cap.
A while back my '02 had a similar leak. I cleaned the cap by removing the seal from the cap and using cleaner and the small(est) parts brush in my kit to get into the crevices. Applied lubricant to all and put it back together paying particular attention to the way I put the cap on the reservoir. It has not leaked since. The next step I was going to take was to buy a new cap and seal from Ford parts counter. In this case I would skip the aftermarket part.
It's pretty common for the earlier Escapes to leak from the cap, mine was doing the same thing. I found just the rubber seal part at a local AutoZone, for about $6.00. Pulled out the old seal from the cap, put the new one in and leaks gone. For me the aftermarket part works fine, up to you on how much $ you want to spend, but, there's just not much to a brake cap seal.
