Ok you guys must no have been on here before. I am needing help on how to change the freeze plug block heater and how hard is it. Can a shade tree mechanic like my self do it. 1986 f250 4x4 diesel 6.9
Thanks in advance
A little time consuming, but not to hard.
1 Drain coolant
2 Remove starter
3 Remove old block heater. They are held in with a screw treaded through a butterfly clamp. I have seen either a screw head or an alan head on the screw. When removing the heater be prepaired for some coolant to come out of the block even though the coolant was drained. The heater has an O-ring to seal it to the block.
4 clean the hole where the heater goes.
5 Replace heater
6 Refill coolant, checking for leaks
7 Put starter back on and you are good to go.
Sounds about right the starter is a pain to get off. Is there an easyer way to get the top bolt ontop the starter the one you cant see. I have never had any luck with those darn top bolts there. Oh and do they pop out of the hole pretty easy i already got the screw lose. Will it just fall out now or what.
I have the best luck with a combination of extensions to ge out past the end of the starter. After you get the screw loose on the heater, wiggle it around and it will come out fairly easy.
Okay so i got the old heater out looks like the oring is pretty hard after all these years. But when it came out there was no spring thang that tightens to the block on the back of the heater itself. So i felt around in the hole and found a spring, one half of the little bow thang and thats it.
What is the best way to get the rest of this stuff out cant reach with my finger to get the other half.
