The previous owner of my truck just bolted my battery ground to the bracket above the alternator.I asked about that here before, and I was told that where it's at is just fine.I would like to put it back where it should be from factory so hopefully someone can provide an exact location for us.
i can tell by the bolt hole on the cable, that it isn't a very large bolt. i cant locate a bolt the correct size in the area that the length of the cable plays out to. could it be the starter?
I don't have a six or picture but have a evtm manual for '86 with a picture. G203 shows two connections from the battery cable. One bolt above the starter pointing down, between starter and block maybe. Then the cable goes under the motor mount and attaches with another cable to the side of the block, just above oil pan near front. Hope this helps.
Hey greyghost, I'm not for sure on the batt cable (I believe it goes on one of the starter bolts),but make sure you get those body grounds hooked up before you turn anything on.I've seen some weird stuff happen if they are not,the ones from the firewall to the engine.I'd bolt that battery ground some place where you don't have to mess with it when you have to replace something, but maybe on the starter is a good place, that way you know it's disconnected before you pull the starter?I always use a good star or lock washer and a little dielectric (or regular if you don't have it) grease on the connection, that way you don't ever have to worry about if it's getting a good ground (-20* in wind and snow when it won't start and you have to crawl under it to check).Sounds like your getting ready to light the "beast"?
IIRC the negative battery cable on the i6 has three (3) connections, The battery clamp, a bolt terminal about 2/3 of the way down, and an end bolt terminal.
Obviously the battery clamp goes on the battery, the center one connects to the chassis, the end one connects under a starter bolt.
Also ensure you have a ground strap between the engine and chassis, chassis and cab, cab and engine, well as might ensure you have one from chassis to bed as well. Ground straps are extremely important.
