2002 V10 Preventative Maintenance

I have a 2002 F250 V10 Larait 4x4 crew cab with 107k miles. I am looking for preventative maintenance tips to make this truck last. Here is what I have done to is so far:

1. New brakes (pads, rotors, calipers) all around
2. 4 new gas magnum shocks
3. new power steering lines
4. new exhaust manifold studs both sides
5. 4 new tires
6. flushed all fluids and refilled with mobil 1 synthetic fluids
7. replaced rusty brake lines
8. new plugs/ignition caps (replaced last year)

Is there anything I am missing? When do I need to replace the timing chain/water pump? I plow snow in the winter and tow a 34' camper in the summer.

With proper care, what is the expected life of the v10 engine? I want to get a f350 diesel, but cant afford the payment right now.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you in advance!!!!

Filters (air and fuel), check the rear leaf for cracks in the middle of the packs, grommets. 200-300k shouldn't be a problem if you don't beat the snot out of it.

Serpentine belt was replaced 2 years ago. I have a K&N airintake kit on the truck. Fuel filter replaced last month and is replaced every year. Rear timbrens are installed to assist with the camper weight. Not sure how I would check the leaf springs for cracks....any suggestions? Thanks for the replies and the suggestions

Scraprat....what are these grommets you are talking about?

1) Change coolant every 2 years
2) Throw the K&N away, use high quality dry (I like Napa Gold)
3) Replace upstream O2 sensors
4) When you say plug caps, do you mean COP's or just the boots? If just boots, I would recommend new COP's at 150K.
5) Been running "no name" gas? Then replace fuel injectors at 150K.

Transmission flush! I do mine every spring and fall...may be overkill, but cheaper than a new trans or being stuck on the side of the road!

What do you mean by "COP's"? i changed all of the plugs and the ignition caps that are on top of the plugs last year. If it is a v10, are there 10 fuel injectors? What and where are the o2 sensors? Are they servicable by me, or are they dealer specific?

Tranny and all other fluids are flushed every year and replaced with all mobil 1 synthetic fluids.

Thanks for your help

"COP" stands for Coil On Plug and that is the proper name for what is on top of the spark plugs. There are two pieces to them; the actual coil and the plug boot. Did you replace the entire unit or just the boots? There are 10 fuel injectors and I wouldn't worry about them at all. Run some injector cleaner through the tank every now and again and there fine. The O2 or Oxygen sensors are located just downstream of the exhaust manifolds. There is one on each side (bank 1 and bank 2). They are part of the feedback loop that the ECU uses for proper fuel control (air/fuel ratio). At 100K they are probably not preforming as new. It is not a bad idea to replace them. Any auto parts store will sell replacements for about $75 each.

I am not sure if both pieces were replaced. Now that I know there are 2 pieces, maybe I will work on changeing them myself.

As for the injectors, I always run good quality gas, as well as utilizing Lucas brand and Gumout injector cleaners.

I will look into the o2 sensors and get them replaced. any other final suggestions? Thanks for your help

If you paid for it you should know. The boots are only about $10/ea while the entire COP is going to be $60/ea.

Yeah, it is a hard pill to swallow. And they might last as long as 500K miles... Most folks just replace as needed (engine develops miss). They are relatively easy to change, although figuring out which one failed sometimes turns into a trial and error pain. I googled and found a place selling 10 Motorcraft coils (all I'll use) for $480.
Being an engineer and the engine guru in the family, I get MASSIVE grief when any of my vehicles are running anything but absolutely perfect. And I hate spending time under the hood on a 110 degree day in the middle of a trip.... 90% of the miles on our truck are hard miles - towing or hauling. And at least a few trips are in temps well over 100. The thermal stresses on electronics is just brutal.
So I chose to replace all 10 at 150K. I also keep a couple of the old (but still working) ones in the tool box.

If you regularly run name brand gas, the injectors should be good to at least 250K.

Don't spend $60 per COP, don't spend $48 per COP either...You can get a good COP for the 6.8L V10 at jegs.com for $25 each. Sometimes they are on sale for $20. Shipping is fast and inexpensive. These are high quality and work great.

I just bought 10 cops with boots for $94. On ebay.
Time will tell how long they last. My truck has about 120 000kms.

i aggree with the coolant flush but for 1 k&n makes a great filter and for that matter oil filters so dont get rid of that if you have it.

your wasting your money if your replacing o2's, cop's and injectors if there not bad. ask your self this who replaces this stuff on say hondas or toyotas or any domestic cars? they dont. you do it when it fails
