I was driving along today and the truck shuddered like someone killed the engine for a second... then it came back again. What's up with that!? I had 1/2 tank when that happened. My inline fuel pump is "chirping" and I'm really considering doing all the fuel line mods. What could it be?
I've had my truck buck before, but that was when I was pushing "E"... the trans has been doing this for awhile. But yeah, that's why I posted this here... it was RIGHT after my other thread. Do what you think is best... I'm just curious what's going on here.
How many times did it buck? Did the SES light flash?
Many times that little buck you're describing is the CPS acting up. If you don't have a spare you carry around with you go buy one from Ford or International now. Don't get one from the local parts store.
If the CPS goes out it's time to walk, so pick one up ASAP.
Oh yeah... it only did it once. I have NO idea if the light came on. It was done long before I got a chance to look around. But it was a good stumble for sure. Any way to test that CPS?

Yes the Camshaft position sensor. No way to test it for us ordinary folks, but the part only costs around $25 so it's cheap insurance.

Well, I have a few other things going on along with this one so, it might be a combination of things. I had my truck do the same thing when I was pushing "E"... but twice instead. I have noticed now more than ever my inline fuel pump is "chirping" and my starts are pretty long. I've got new GP's and a working GP-relay so I know that's not it. If I start the truck right after I shut it off, it'll fire right up so, I think the starting issue is a fuel thing. I'm trying to get together my fuel mods so I can get rid of the quick-disconnects and the mixer in my fuel tank. I'm gonna do the harpoon mod as well... I don't wanna spend more time putting that last 5 galons in there than I did putting the first 35! I also want to do the regulated fuel return as well as the high-pressure oil crossover. My dad has the press to make high-pressure lines... I just need to figure out what the fitting sizes are, what degree of bend, and how long to make it. Same goes for the fuel... I know there are some threads about this, but I had a hard time with the search function so, I think I'm gonna call Clay. I know he'll tell me. I've talked to him a few times and he's there to help, not sell you something... although for him, it'd be nice! I also need to figure out what's up with my transmission. It's so new so I'm kinda surprised... either it's the fact I could still have the original torque converter (I don't know... my dad can't remember), or Jaspers are just crap. I'm gonna try calling John Wood and Brian (from BTS) and see if I can pick their brains a bit. I'm kinda looking forward to it so... that should be interesting. Any thoughts or ideas any of you might have now that I've said what I've said? Could it be a fuel thing?
Just to get it out of the way, Jaspers are crap. Now you know.
If your fuel pump is chirping, then it's likely on it's way out. If you want to do the in tank mods, instructions are here Welcome to guzzle's In-tank Hutch Mod Web Page If you want to do the regulated return, Clay sells one.

I know Clay sells one, but I know it uses normal fittings and hoses... so I'd like to make it. I know I can make the high-pressure crossover as well since my dad has the machine to make those kinda hoses. Thanks for the link... I love his website. He's got a TON of useful info on there. I want to do the CCV as well... my IC tubes and turbo were kinda oily when I did my GP's.
Well, that stinks about the Jasper. I wonder when this one's gonna die? What's funny though is ever since the beginning, it'd jamb into 3rd. What's with that!? It'll glide into all but 3rd... the only way to not jamb into 3rd is to let off the pedal. It's weird. I'm sure that pump's gonna go soon. It's the second for this truck.
Question: is there an aftermarket pump that I could buy instead of OEM that'd be better?
Well, it did it again today. This time, I was outside doing something and it "choked"... it was just like someone killed it for a second. Then it came right back. That pump under the floor is really chirping now. I think that might just be the problem... but I don't have the money to throw around to see if that's it. Is there any way I could test it? Can the dealer do that? I am VERY leery of dealers, but IDK what else to do. I'd rather pay for a test than a pump that doesn't help me at all. Any suggestions?
The fuel pump won't cause the sudden choke or cough. If it's the engine cutting out, I still think the CPS is the place to start and only costs around $25.
You can plumb in a fuel pressure gauge on the back side of the fuel bowl and watch your fuel pressure yourself cheaper than a dealer will test it for you. Another simple test would be to pull the fuel line off the back side of the fuel pump, plug the line coming from the tank, and get you a small piece of hose. Stick the short hose on the back of the fuel pump and stick the other end in a fresh 5 gallon container of diesel. If the chirping goes away, it's time to drop your tank.
