i have a 2004 f250 with the 6.0 crew cab fx4 i was leavin my buddies house and had to drive through the yard and it was wet. so i put in 4 low got back on the driveway and went to switch back to 2wd and nothing. couldnt get it to do anything i tried for an hour jiggling the switch while in reverse neutral and drive. i climbed unerneath and knocked on the motor on the side of the transfer case nothing. i clled a buddy who works for ford to come over and he tried for about an hour couldnt get anything. so the next morning i drove to a diesel mechanic shop a buddy of mine owns to see if he could do anything ( its right down the street and i didnt get over 20 mph) he tried for a few minutes then told me he had a used motor for the transfer case hed give me to try( from ford they run around 400$) so i went home climbed under and took everything off put switch on 2wd craanked it and put it in neutral with e break down. took took off the motor turned the transfer case with a crescent wrench and bolted the new motor up and it was all good all in all after i got the motor it took about 15 minutes... from what ive heard 4low gets stuck alot after asking around everyones told me to jus use 4 high if needed. just wondering if anybody else has had the same problem on here
John, we get reports once in a while here, of getting stuck in 4xLow, or stuck in one of the other positions. It's a motor, so they can and do fail. As often as not it is just a relay that has failed, but apparently in your case you have proven it was the motor.
It is not so big a problem that I would avoid using 4xLow. That would be an overabundance of caution I think.
BTW, you need to know that you should ONLY switch to and from 4xLow in neutral or park. Don't even try it in drive or reverse. It is likely to be locked in gear, particularly since you said you had moved onto the hard driveway. That in itself could have burned out the motor. Maybe you only tried it in drive and reverse after it had already failed to work. You were not clear on that part.
Don't take this as an insult to your intelligence, but did you have the brake applied? I didn't see that mentioned in your post. Mine is picky in how I drop it into 4 low. I have to drop it in N (park never works for me), apply the brake, wait a couple seconds, then hit the switch.
Ehh, nevermind. Didn't read completely through your post. Replacing the motor worked so it wasn't how you were engaging it...

Reason: my laziness prevented me from reading the entire post...
Well my question is why did you need 4Lo to get back into the driveway? All it does is lower the gear ratio to increase wheel speed... you weren't bogging out of his yard were you?
