Dso???

Good Day,

Awhile back i asked for some help deciphering the vin# for my 66 4X4. A few people replied back with useful and apprediated information. But i still do not understand what the DSO number means.
It says DSO 547978

Anybody have an idea?

Thanx

What John is trying to say is that someone sat down with a form and specified what they wanted for this specific truck. It could have been the paint, suspension or something like that.
The factory built it to those specs and sent the completed truck to the dealer.
DSO means Domestic Special Order. The disctric number is a two digit number and yours (54) was for Omaha Nebraska. I suppose the 7978 is for the order # or package code or something like that.

that is correct info. the 7978 is actually the last four digits on the order form. all cars and trucks used a special order form and you can actually have two vehicles with the same 6 digit DSO but the actual special order number on the form is like 8 or 10 digits long. i have 3 1968 cougars that were hertz rentals and they were all part of a single order so all the herts cars have the same last 4 digits of 8050. my cars have DSO's 338050 528050 and 538050. a special order pickup is actually a rare animal but unless it was special ordered with goodies it does not add value (a special order brown 6 cylinder 3 speed pickup with back up lights probably just would not get the juices flowing! LOL ) hawkrod

I believe it's not possible to find out from the special order DSO number what was actually specially ordered. (Maybe Hawkrod can comment on this.) I was told by the original owner that my Merc was special ordered - it's got transistor ignition and trailer package - but the DSO is an ordinary B7. A buddy's '66 Merc has a special order number yet is unusual only in that it is a swb with V8, 4 spd, D60 Powr-Lok, and no other options.

yeah, i can answer that one. one of three things probably happened. the first and most common is that your buddy went to the dealer and gave the salesman a list of what he wanted and the salesman had a similar vehicle that only needed an item added. he signs the customer and tells him the order will be filled next week and off the customer goes. the salesman runs the truck into the shop and they add the special parts and TA-DA you have "the order". in this case the customer is never any the wiser and is usually sure the dealer took care of him. the second is the same as the first except the vehicle comes from another local dealer inventory and may go through the same process or by some odd coincedence it may already have that equipment. the third and least common is the dealer was filling his regular order for inventory and ordered the truck for sales stock instead of a special order. i am not really familiar with canada sales but when i worked at lincoln mercury the first two things were pretty much daily occurances. hawkrod
