87-94 GP Controller
Does anyone know if it's safe to use a test light to test the white wire is grounding on the controller . ??
Example, One end of the test light on 12v+, touch the other to the white wire on the relay to test that the controller is grounding.
Or will that back feed the controller and damage it.

Festus, to be on the safe side, I'd disconnect the ground to test it. If it is truly grounded, you'd be OK. If it was not actually grounded, you might nuke the controller.

Disconnecting the ground does not get the goal accomplished.
The goal is to test the controller signal with a test light ... Does it ground or not.
I suspect it will back feed and destroy the controller, I just thought I'd ask, maybe someone has done it and it hasn't hurt anything.
I have only one 87+ controller, it's good I want to keep it that way...
One day I'll get my hands on one I can dissect!

If you hook the test light ground to a ground, then probe the white wire terminal with the key on, you will see battery voltage on that terminal.
Power from the ignition side of the relay trigger coil is passing through the coil to the white wire terminal.
So the voltage from a test light will not hurt the controller, it see's power at all times when the key is on.

If you think you have a grounding issue for the controler. Run a separate ground wire direct from the battery to the controler grounding bolt attach it there (avoiding the grounding from the block). I did this 6 years ago and my grounding problems / controler problems went away.

I repair things correctly, not hack in kludges.
