I need help sizing U-joint for my 54 f250.I am using the original driveshaft with a 9"rearend from an 81 ford van.I need a U-joint with two different size bearing caps.If anyone could help me with part numbers and brand names,I would appreciate the help Thanks F250RED
Napa is a good place for this.
if you know what year the 9"came out of then they should be able to match that with your stock u-joint.
my 9" takes 1330 and my t5 tranny takes 1310,they had this on the shelf.
I tried these numbers at NAPA and Advance Auto, and the numbers would relate to anything.I need a company or brand name or manufacturer to pursue this further. Thanks F250RED
U joints are really simple - measure across the caps - both directions and measure both of the cap diameters. NAPA has anything you need - except a new parts jockey apparently!
Wow this is weird I just went yesterday and bought the exact u joint for my project that you are talking about. Anyway Napa has just what you need. They had mine in stock. If you dont want to measure then take the shaft and yoke in with you they will help you find what you need.
Vintage tin is right. Your OE driveshaft will want a 1310 series joint and most of the light trucks through the 80's and early 90's used a 1330 series joint. That's what it will take to mate up to your 9". The Spicer part number for the 1310/1330 conversion joint that you need to mate the two together is 5-134x. Most auto parts suppliers either use Spicer's numbers outright or will be able to cross reference them. Napa shows it in their NAPA Proformer brand as part# NPJ P353 and also in the Precision brand as part# PUJ 353. Here's the search if you are curious:
Picked up a 353 Ujoint today it will fit the 9" rear end but is too wide for the original 54 f250 driveshaft, looks like I may have to change the yoke,I have to modify the drive shaft anyway it`s an1 1/2" too short.when I put the driveshafta the way forward on the spline, how far should I pull it back for an accurate measurement. Thanks F250RED
With the weight of the truck on the rear axle, you want about an 1" to 1 1/4" of yoke travel for suspension compression. You'll need a little more if the bed or anything major is missing to account for squat when it's all together.
I'm sorry that joint didn't work out for you. It sounds like something has been changed here with the driveshaft maybe. The books call for the same 1310 joint in all the F-100 through F-350's. Rather than guessing, it would be better to measure. Can you give me measurements of the cross width with the caps in place and also the cap diameter of both your driveshaft and the 9 inch's pinion yoke? The more accurate the measurements, the better.
