some of you have seen the thread i posted, where i put tie downs out of an 02 truck into my 97 to replace the god awefull originals. (if not look through my pics for the finished product.
anywho, i posted up a simmilar thread over on tractor forum because i thought some people might find it useful over there as well. one guy chimed in that the 97 he had had, had the same tie downs that i had put in which were also the same as the ones in his 03.... here is the odd part: his truck had them when he bought it.... back in 98 or 99. and he knows the original owner and knows for a fact, that he never changed the tie downs..... so my question is, WTF??? would this have been a dealer option or maybe one of the truck plants used the (newer style) tie downs while the others used the (older style) tie downs? any input is greatly apriciated, as this has me really scratching my head.
To be honest with you, I've never seen the "newer" ones before. My '99 has the "old" style ones, which stink because of how small the holes are in them. If those holes were just slightly bigger they would be perfect but can't find a set of heavy duty tie downs that properly fit.
I am curious now, do the bolt holes match up perfectly? If so, I might be changing mine out as soon as I find replacements.

yes the mounting holes match up perfectly, however, i believe you will find just as i did that your original bolts are so rusted to the point that the only way to get the old tie downs out is to break the old bolts. believe me, i sprayed penatrant for two weeks, both inside the bed, and on the exposed ends up underneath the truck, shocked the bolts by smacking them with a hammer, tried breaking them lose by tightening them, and nothing worked. so what i did was take an air chisel, but a hammer and punch will work, itll just take longer, and i knocked out the little square nuts that were welded to the bed, that the bolts broke off into. then i found some bolts that were just bearly to big to fit the new tie downs, drilled the holes in them to fit the new bolts so that they were very snug. this allows for a slightly bigger and stronger bolt. and then i got a stack of about 4 washers ranging from about an inch in outside diameter down to a lock washer and nut and then loc tighted the threads. the washers are important because the wholes in the bed are so big after you nock out the squar nuts.
