More rear diff questions...

Hey guys n gals.

I have been researching a while on here, and have a few questions that i cant really get solid answers for.

Yesterday i bought a 1999 f150 reg cab shortbox 4x4 for 400 bucks. The rear end was completely out of it, and screwed.

I would like to start looking for a used diff for it, and im unsure of what was in my truck. Is there a solid way to tell if it was a 8.8 or a 9.75? (without looking at the rear diff itself)

Is there much needed to swap to a 9.75 diff if it was a 8.8? I have a set of front and rear diffs lined up for 300 bucks, but they have the 3.73 ratio, and the rear diff is for sure a 9.75. (im not opposed to swapping both front and rear if it isnt much different for a swap)

Are the front diffs the same from year to year?

Is it as easy as checking teh door jamb codes to tell me what size of diff came stock? (i know the ratio was a 3.55)

Any more rear diff info any of you fine ladies/fellas have?

Pic to come! (you guys are gonna love the "lift kit" the guy installed!)

Hi Sheldon.

It depends on what motor came in the truck from the factory.
4.2 and 4.6 will have the 8.8 front and back.
5.4 came with a 9.75 in the rear and 8.8 up front.

Ill do some more searching today if I get free time on the swap to the bigger diff, but if anyone has any advice or info still to add, please chime in.
