Couldn't post for a while but Mil1ion fixed me up, Thanks Mil1ion.
Reason I wanted to post was that I noticed something wierd with my temp gauge the other day. I have an aftermaket electric guage installed, about a week ago I noticed the temp had climbed to 210 which it has done b4. Then, in about 3 seconds it dropped to 180 and stayed there (usually where it is) Is this normal? Is my thermostat OK?
Sounds to me like your thermostat might be getting stuck shut and then opening finally....maybe you should replace it, they are very very cheap, gasket and thermostat under $20. If that isn't the problem it would have to be your gauge acting goofy, there is nothing else that I can think of that would cause such a sudden change in temp unless some of your hoses or radiator passages were getting blocked temporarily and then getting unclogged. Good luck!!
Oft,
Have you seen this happen more than once?
Does it happen identically every time?
Was the truck moving or sitting still?
Highway or city?
There a few things that could cause this.
Do you have a factory gage?
What was it doing?
Give us some more detail.

I was driving but slowly. I have never noticed a fluctuation that fast. Temp generally stays at 180 - 190 but will climb to about 210 - 220 the odd time mith no apperant rym or reason, sitting still, going fast, slow whatever. It usually drops back down to 180-90. It's an aftermarket electrical gauge.
Sounds like the thermostat is hanging a little. Once it opens it takes a little while for the cooler water in the radiator to reach the sender which should be close to the thermostat. If your radiator cap is good 210-220 should be no problem at all. Under pressure 235-240 would be considered getting close to hot. No worries. If you do replace the 'stat go with the Robert-Shaw. It has a bleed orifice to burp the trapped air, or drill a 1/16 hole. That will also help to keep at least a little coolant circulating in the radiator. Hope this helps.
