Red face egr

2005 exc. W/6.0. Unplugged egr valve when off and removed butterfly valve for backpressure all done with engine off and cool! Throwing different codes with check engine light on can clear with my edge chip but trying to figure it out! Seem to be getting less mileage then before only 14.8 to 15.2 tops. 2 less then before! Any ideas? I tried to remove egr valve but will have to use bigger tool, really in there just thought I could pick anyones brain first! Runs great , sometimes turbo spool slow between downshifting!

First off welcome to FTE, there is a great wealth of knowledge here.
Second, what Mods are on your X? We need to know to help.
Be prepared, you may catch flack for using an Edge Tuner, they are not very friendly to your drive train.
Are you using OEM oil, fuel and air filters?
What oil are you using?
Third, anything to do with a 6.0L engine should be addressed in the 6.0L Forum.
As far as removing the EGR valve all you need to do is take out the two bolts , rotate the valve one half inch, run some 12 or 14 gauge romex thru the bolt holes, take a small pry bar place it through the loop resting on the alternator and give it a quick and easy pop upward and it will come out.
Make sure you have:
EGR gasket kit: 3C3Z-9P455-AB
Carb Cleaner liquid and spray.
There is a write up in the 6.0L Tech area on how to do it.
The two bolts are Torqued to 10/ft lbs.
Make Sure You Get bismic's Spread Sheets and Read Them.
Hopefully, the moderator will move this.
Good luck.

Also you need to post your codes and what you are doing to get them.

I bought the excursion a year ago. Its throwing p.0403, 0405 and of course p1000 because it can't do a full doignostic test. No hard driving, wides car for kids. Bought the truck with the edge platinum already installed, don't know if injectors have been replaced yet or mod. New exhaust with 5 inch tail don't know of any more mods. 130000 miles they kept record of all oil changes. No leaks! I'm running amsoil sinthetyc.

Both of those codes have to do with the egr. Insufficient flow and what not. If ya don't mind me asking why did u unplug it? Unplugging it doesn't solve anything. If your ex was running rough and u think this might be the problem I would suggest cleaning it with "carb cleaner". It's a bugger to get out but it'll come out with what the other poster described. Deleting the egr cooler is the best way of getting rid of it rather than unplugging it and the only way to get the codes to turn off is with custom tuning. And yes the edge tuner is not a very popular thing on these trucks. Welcome to fte you came to the right place for answers.

Thanks

Shawn

Thank you Shawn!it was throwing two different codes that I can't remember right now I asked a machenic friend what it is and he told me bad valve so I read how to bypass it and thought that would fix.I was thinking mabey now its just stick open so its throwing the new codes I've plugged it back in and still throws new codes. Thought I could save 400 dollars and just do way with it as per literature I've read on fte but I guesse I probably need to start with a good egr ! By the way I run my edge on stage 3 with 100% defuel. Mabey someone can tell me what adjustments to imput so I don't screw things up!

I'd try cleaning the egr valve before replacing it cause they get pretty gummed up with soot. Put a new oring on it and clean it and see if that fixes it. It's not that difficult to do and your dealership should have the gasket kit. The edge tuner from what I've heard and read eats up trannies. It's better if ya just go back to stock then use that programmer.

Thanks again Shawn! Ill try that. I guesse I'm just use to all the electrical crap that kept going out on my 98 expedition so I asumed that was what went out on the egr!

There is a video around here that shows you how to clean the EGR Valve. It really does not take major muscle to get it out.
Get the gasket from above.
Remove as described from above.
Remove the two o-rings and the gasket at top of valve.
In an upright position, Making Sure The TWO Holes at the Base of the EGR Valve DO NOT Get Any Fluid in Them, soak the valve in CARB Cleaner for 60 to 90 minutes.
With an inexpensive toothbrush gently brush away the liquified black soot from the valve.
At this point the carb cleaner in the can is helpful. Again do not get the holes wet.
Once clean you are almost ready to re-install.
Take a Dry toothbrush and clean out the muck in the manifold where the EGR came from.
Does not need to be perfect.
After you are done brushing you will need to vacuum the crud out of the manifold.
Because I did not have a small enough attachment on my Sears shop vac to get inside the whole I used a paper towel cardboard tube slightly folded over to go down the hole as an extension and it removed all of the crud.
Now replace the EGR valve.
Gently hand tighten each side down alternating a little on each side until the valve is touching the manifold.
Now take your torque wrench and tighten to 10 ft lbs.
Reconnect connector.
Turn key on engine off three times.
Should be ready to go.
If I left anything out please edit.
Do this in clothes that you truely do not care about the black EGR Ink gets sprayed all around when you brush and makes a big mess. Next time I will do it in a cardboard box and not wait 45k miles.
