Looking for some feedback on remote starts? I have installed them myself before, but never on a diesel. I assume on a diesel its a PITA. Viper sells a pretty nice unit that I could use my phone for starting, but I don't know of anyone using them or whose installed the unit on a diesel. My trucks an 05 F350 6.0 Thanks...
I just installed one on my 04, didn't know what I was doing and only took couple of hours. I used the tach option and it works great, haven't chance to use it when it's cold probably won't start great because it doesn't have warm mode, but so far 25 dollars off amazon was well worth it.
I have one on my 05 F350. I didn't install it, as it came to me that way, however its brand is Audiovox 'Prestige'. I have had no issues with it except after I had major work done. My autostart didn't work and simply needed reprogramming for the delayed start for the initial cycling of the system and build pressure(I think). After that no issues.
As for cold weather starts, I have tried it in 'cold' sub 20 degree temps and have always had issues. Typically the truck would crank, fire and die from the rough running. If I used the key no issues though. Go Figure.

I have heard of that before. Why does the cold seem to affect some of these remote start? That's the #1 reason I'm installing a remote start on it.
I personally think my F350 hates the cold. It just runs really rough initially. This had a tendency to cause it to die or cause the remote start to kill the engine to prevent issues. Personally I don't know other than to say, my truck hate the cold. Guess thats why I live in Phoenix.
I have the factory "gold package" on mine, never any issues starting in hot or below freezing. The factory system has provisions for diesels which includes a start delay for the glow plugs. Most upper level a/m systems have this as well. The only drawback on the factory one is that it is not 2 way capable, which would be nice. Some a/m are 2 way. If you go with the factory system and have it put in by the dealers installer then it is covered with the warranty, but I still would like to have a 2 way system.
It also has 2 aux functions, I hooked 1 up to the SEIC so I can warm it up a little quicker from inside the house on those frozen mornings.
If you have a chipped key (PATS) you will also need this part
<table x:str="" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 92pt;" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="123"><col style="width: 92pt;" width="123"><tbody><tr style="height: 13.5pt;" height="18"> <td class="xl24" style="height: 13.5pt; width: 92pt;" height="18" width="123">7L2Z-19G365-AA</td> </tr></tbody></table>
I would try parts guy ed before calling the dealer to see if he can get it before searching other places, here's a link from a google search.............
You can see there are 2 buttons on the remote, these are for aux functions, originally designed to turn on the rear window defroster, trunk release or to open the sliding rear side doors on mini vans. I just wired to the SEIC for 1 of them. Can also use the other to roll up or down the mindows but haven't done it yet.
The 2 way systems communicate back to the key fob remote to let you know the status (engine running, alarm tripped, etc.) again these are not factory systems that do this but they are nice.
There are 3 different systems......
Gold = Remote Start, Keyless Entry, Vehicle Security System (RS, KE, VSS)
Silver = RS, KE
Bronze = VSS
