rear axle question

what size of rear axle is used on our f150's? my friend has a 5.4l fx4 and he wants to change the gears in the diff but is not sure what axle is under his truck. he has 3.73s in the truck now and wants to change them since he put 33 inch tires on it.

4.6's have 8.8
