hello thinking of changing the ring and pinion in my axle. The truck is a 2005 crew cab f250 6.0 diesel 2WD. I think the rear axle is stock with the 3.73; i want to go lower and can't decide between 4.1's and 4.58's any one has any input on the gears thanks.
my concern is more on the line of how much more it will tow btween the three and how much it will hurt my miles per gallon tryin to see if the gain in towing is the loss in milage
I am looking into getting a 5th wheel and want to know what size to go with i am leaning towards a toyhauler and they are pertty heavy i want to make sure my truck can tow it with no problem and even take a few inclines if i hit the mountains. the RV's i am looking at range from 12,000 to 18,000 pounds. I really dont think it will tow the 18,000lb Rv but looking at makeing it tow a 12 to 14,000 lb easy work for the truck.
I would say 4:10's but I would probably stick with what you have.
Anything lower and your mpg's are going to suffer big time. A 3:73 or 3:55 is a highway gear and 4:10's are used for pulling, big tires, slower driving and heavy loads.

I agree with this. I think if you are running stock size tires you will be fine with your 3:73 gears. If you are going to a 35 in. tire I think you should go with 4:10 gears. I have stock tires and 3:73 gears and have no problems towing a heavy load, even on grades.
